Been reading through here and it appears that TTT is a bit pants really. However, most of the posts are 2005 and since it's nearly 2007, I wondered if people are still seeing poor quality from TTT or has the service improved? |

I have been using it for a while but it does take a while to figure out how best to use it. The location of incidents is pretty good but the extent of the disruption should be taken with a pinch of salt.
It's usually a mistake to allow it to automatically re-route you. As an example you may have a motorway with a 5 minite queue on it and a parallel A road that does through a small town. As far as the tomtom is concerned it's better to go the A road route but usually it isn't, especially if the queue isn't there anyway. So look at each incident and if it's a big one then avoid it if not stay on the motorway. By big I mean a closed road, big accident etc. In this case it will be right and it will get you round the problem, esp if you are a long way from hoem and don't know the area.
In summary I ignore virtually everything it says but have it as insurance against the big road problems. Is it worth having? Depends on how often you travel away from home and how costly a few hours delay is to you. |

I've subscribed to traffic for the past 18 months - it is now far better than it was originally - I drive 40,000 + miles each year and it is now good enough to mostly rely on the info.
It did save me missing a ferry a few months ago - M20 shut at 4am with no warnings and no radio coverage - paid for itself in one hit on this occassion. _________________ -----------------------------------------------------------

Same here, 40k+ a year and god is it good round here, On the way back from the BTCC meeting at Silverstone there was a a crash on the M40, it updated as I got onto the roundabout at the start of the slip road, seconds before I was to get on the motorway, did a lap of the roundabout and went the new route, about 10 miles later I went over the M40 and the traffic was stationary for miles, how I laughed!!!!!
worth £200 just for that one time! |

I am in the start of my free one month trial and have to say it was brilliant on Saturday as the route I had planned to Portsmouth showed that there had been an accident on the M40 with 6 mile tailbacks, as I was travelling down the M1/M25 route.
So far so good, and I check it daily on my way down the M1 to work and back.
I think I will subscribe when the free trial ends

We used it last month, once for a trip to Basildon (240 mile roundtrip) and then again to Manchester (600 mile roundtrip) and couldn't fault it.
Very accurate and for us well worth the sub's.

I too have found it more accurate in recent months than it used to be. It should be clarified that TomTom Traffic is merely a GPRS Delivery method for standard RDS-TMC data via the internet rather than the traditional FM delivery. Therefore the improvements are down to the data provider (in TomTom's case iTIS) improving the quality of their information. _________________ Darren Griffin |

I’d say generally speaking it’s getting better – but it can still be problematic and you still need to apply common sense before taking its suggested re-route.
It still occasionally fails to connect. Usually if I close down, switch off my phone and re-boot (I’m using TTM5 on an SPV C600) it manages to connect. Maybe it’s paranoia, but this always fails when there is a big hold-up…
e.g. Last week, the M62 was blocked at Huddersfield (I commute Manchester-Leeds every day) and it failed to connect to TTT all the way home. As it turns out, I think staying on the motorway and rolling along at 20 mph all the way was probably the best option.
That reinforces the earlier post – because the traffic info on anything other than motorways is at best ‘patchy’, it always sees a re-route as the best option.
Last night (being Groundhog Day) the M62 was blocked at Huddersfield. This time TTT connected, but tried to send me over the Woodhead Pass. From bitter experience of sitting for hours staring at “BYEPASS NOW!” posters through Tintwistle, I ignored this but still came off the M62 until it found an alternative (random A roads until I rejoined the motorway past the worst of the hold-ups).
Most days, I am directed off for a junction or two to get around the worst of the Leeds traffic, but I’m never entirely convinced that I wouldn’t be quicker just staying put. This is especially true when you are sat for ages in some random village, but TTT shows no hold-ups (presumably because it’s not getting info for the minor roads). |

I have always stuck up for TTT as long as you know how to use it. However my rules have recently been blown out the water as the traffic info has been so much better
I have it set to re-route automatically, but if the reroute only saves me around 5-10 mins I usually ignore it as bitter experience told me the motorway holdup for 10-15mins will probably not be there (old traffic data) or the reroute takes longer through towns, A roads etc.
Well in the run-up to Xmas I was following my usual don't follow the re-route for 10-15min delays but when I actually got to the delays THEY WERE THERE and the timing was almost spot on !!
In a quandry now, will have to start trusting all the data now rather than just the major holdups :D
I know this is nothing to do with TOMTOM but finally ITIS seem to be getting their act together. _________________ Samsung S22 Android, Google Maps & Camera Alert |

I'm about to subscribe to ttt. I was wondering if it works in the cities like glasgow for example. I travel to work about 20 minetes but sometimes it takes me 40 minutes. I sometimes go for some longer journeys at least ones a month. Is it worth? How accurate is it in cities? Thanks. |

When driving in London I've found it pretty useful, I can't vouch for Glasgow but presume that the info used is equally OK nationwide. I've not used the service that long (around 8 months) but have been impressed when it's got me somewhere via some weird and wonderful route in the countryside, and I've seen the queues I've avoided. Very satisfying. The only thing with cities though is that normally I find you don't know if you've really gained anything, because you don't generally see the mayhem your supposed to be avoiding i.e. you have to take Tom Toms ETA's as gospel. Hope that makes sense. _________________ Mike

|
|
I have the tomtom 720T. Used the traffic receiver first time today 4th December 2007 on a trip to Plymouth. It struggled to get a connection, did a couple of times briefly but no information came down.
Set off back the next day and I got a green circle (connected) immediately but no info until I got to Bristol when it popped up that there was a lane closure on the M4 with a 12 mile tailback adding 3 hours,
Blimey I thought thats good, showed me a map and everything, I was about to re-route when I saw a Motorways sign confirming it but it said delay 30 minutes??? 3 hours?? 30 Minutes?
As it was the first traffic notifcation I decided to risk it and check and I got to Junc 15 in about 25-30 minutes, gritting my teeth expecting the worst... yes there was a lane closure and I went through at 70mph, no queue for 12 yards never mind 12 miles, delay? NONE!
So my first venture proved to be not only incorrect but ridiculously incorrect so right at this moment I have to say it seems absolutely worthless so I would caution first anyone thinking about spending £50 on it.
I bought it with the tomtom so was much cheaper but Im wondering now if Ive wasted that money?
If anyone has had a more positive experience I would love to hear about it
Cheers
