Hi,

I recently picked up a shiny new TT 720 - a nice step up from my old ONE. I'm now looking for a more permanent mounting solution for it. I'm pretty much sold on a Brodit mount, but I'm not yet sure which would suit me best.

First up I could go for the standard passive mount. I could then use the standard ciagrette lighter cable to charge it as and when needed. This would of course be the cheapest and simplest approach.

Alternatively I splash out on a powered cradle. The pain is that if I'm doing that, I'd rather avoid the permanently trailing curly cable and would be tempted to go for the hard wired option, which probably means paying for someone to install it, adding up to a fair bit more expense.

I'd not against paying for a powered mount, but I suspect the TT will spend a lot more time plugged in at home (gathering updates) and so is likely to be well charged most of the time anyway.

I'd be really interested to hear from anyone with any of the 3 Brodit mounts, and how they find them in use. Likewise if anyone has experience of getting hardwired mounts installed, who can do this sort of thing and how much it likely costs I'd again be very interested.

I have the Brodit passive mount.

If I upgraded to the active mount I would save 10 seconds in connecting the power cable.

I could buy the active mount if I wanted.

If money is no object then go for the active mount. Laughing

The active mount plugs into cigar lighter so hard install not required.

There are two versions of the active mount, one with a cigarette lighter adapter, and one with an in-line power supply for permanent installation.

To my mind:
1. the permanent install version just means you won't be able to remove the mount, thereby attracting thieves.
2. the cigarette lighter version is only of any use if you want to use the standard power adapter in another car.

I'll stick to the passive mount and standard CLA when I have the spare cash to buy one.

Thanks for the comments so far.

I'm aware that there are 2 active mounts, and that the cigarette lighter option negatives the need for a pro install. However I'm not mad keen on having a permanently trailing cable.

I see that the hard wired option makes it a slightly bigger target for thieves, but it'll be down on the console and my suspicion is that there are enough sucker mounts out there to be more obvious targets.

I don't plan on using the TT in multiple cars, so the passive mount / charge cable combo does seem quite tempting in terms of cost and convenience.

Another point is that my Brodit console mount is not 100% sturdy, and fitting the 720 into an active mount in a hurry would probably result in the whole lot flying off onto the floor.

I'm using the passive mount with a mini move clip. The power socket is in the centre consul so the excess cable is routed behind the dash and comes out behind the Pro clip.
It is close enough to the steering wheel to be able to operate the touch screen with my index finger without taking my hand off the steering wheel. The O2 XDA Orbit is just out of view bottom left is also on a Proclip and mini Move Clip. In coming call go to the Go720 and just need a touch of the Accept button on the Go screen.
The photo was taken in the shopping trolley a 2004 Ford Fusion.

How serious do you find this issue ? Is it much worse than the standard mount ? I have been looking at Active Mount 215269

The Mount is fine, but the console mounted Brodit Clip which is car specific is easily dislodged on my car, but every car is different, and there are many different designs and locations to fit a Brodit clip.

Thank you, it would be Brodit ProClip for BMW 520-540-M5 E39 2001 - Center mount Item No. 652280, hoping that this has been such a good seller that they have a stable design and location. I may just give it a try, confident in my installer to get the best from the ProClip

What you can do is buy an extension lead so if you have a "Cigarette Lighter" in the back lay your car charger under the seat and carefully lay the cable up under the edges of the interior so it's just tucked away out of sight, that's what I've done on my Pug 307 and it's fine, the new VW maybe more of a challenge though!

That is very unusual for a Brodit ProClip. We've used them for years in dozens of cars and never had such an issue.

I've just taken delivery of the Active Mount with Cigarette Lighter Plug for the 520/720 and will be posting a mini review with pictures in a day or so. It works very well, is easier to attach the x20 to then the supplied TomTom mount and is very small so unlikely to attract much attention.
