My TomTom Go 500 sometimes 'freezes' (hangs) whilst it is navigating a route, then it shuts down and restarts with the previous route.
I haven't downloaded anything new recently except the pgpsworld speed cams.
What can I do to fix this annoying problem ? |

How much Free Memory have you got on the SD Card? A minimum of 2MB should be OK. _________________ Richard

Have you only noticed this since you've been using a bigger SD Card?
The only thing I can think of is that the SD Card may be too slow, or getting slower. _________________ Richard

I have had the bigger SD card for many months but this problem only started about 2 weeks ago
How do I speed-up the SD card, format and reinstall ? remove some oldstuff ? (for instance, I've still got the original map on it plus the most recent one) |

Normally the 'older' TTs are reasonably stable, so I'm only grasping at straws.
You could do a format of the SD Card, whether it will improve the situation I don't know.
If you have a Full Backup of everything, there is no reason not to give it a go.
You don't need old and new maps, unless you are trying something out. Or there is some major difference in them that you want to utilise. _________________ Richard

I have sent a copy of my original posting to Tom Tom support. I'll let you know if they come up with a satisfactory response. |

Well, the response from Tom tom was:-
Have you tried resetting your device? If you haven't, please do so............
I would also suggest you to try and install the latest application on your device via HOME, deleting the one that there is inside the device right now as it may have some file corrupted. If you need instructions on how to do this please don't hesitate on asking for them.
These two things should return your device back to normal again.
I've tried both of those, and it didn't fix it so I did a format and reinstall from a backup, that made no difference either, so I've bought a new 1gb card and formatted it, but I can't get it to load properly.
I've tried using Tom Tom Home to restore my backup and I've tried copying the original card to a folder on my computer and then pasting to the NEW card but each time when I start the TTG 500 I get the red cross on the SD card symbol on the screen when I start it up telling me that it hasn't intalled properly. What am I doing wrong ?
BTW I have realised that the original fault was when I was asking it to recalculate a route whilst it was navigating but It has got worse and now sometimes (but not always) it hangs when I ask it for a route whether or not it is navigating or not. |

Looking at your posts, it still seems to point to the particular SD cards you're using.
Do you still have the original card that came with the Go?
If so, try it.
Do you still get this problem with that one?
If not, then it must be your new cards. |

I had a similar problem a while back on my 700. The system was reporting that I had plenty of spare space on the card.
I use a Mac, so the PC may be different, but the reported spare space did not include the contents of the Trash (Recycle Bin). The Mac keeps a separate Trash for each volume (disc/Sd card or whatever). Once I had connected the GO to the computer and emptied the Trash, I found the problem disappeared. _________________ TTGO 700 (dead)

The cards are different makes. One is brand new and the other had been in use for many months before this fault stated

How would that give a valid comparison ?
The original card is only 256mb so I cannot get the latest map on there thus the 'load/usage/demand' on the 256mb card would not be the same |

Then don't bother to try it...
Certainly seems a valid test to me though. |

Andy's point is that if the Device works OK with the original SD Card, (and it doesn't matter about which Map it has loaded on it) then it must be down to the new card.
It's just something else to try, and that you should search every avenue.
But if you don't want to, then that is your decision.
I also think it is a valid test. _________________ Richard

Yes ! I had already accepted that the SD card is possibly 'on it's way out' (why else would I have bought another ?)
However the new card seems to be faulty as I cannot load anything to it and now my computer does not recognise it either !
So, I will take it back, change it for another and try again
