Nuvi not shutting down properly

My Nuvi 310 is permanently on, ie it swithches itself on and off through the car charger lead going on and off with the ignition.
All has been fine for a couple of years until now. When powering down I get the swiching off in 30 secs bit. It then appears to switch off but the screen remains a light grey colour. Not noticeable in daylight but when I returned to the van in darkness it was shining bright like a smash my window and steal me beacon!!!
If I push and hold the off button it will turn off properly, but due to where the Nuvi is positioned this isn't pratical.
Any ideas or is it on the way out?

Took the nuvi out and run down the battery till it turned off. Back in use and all seems well at the moment.
