Is there such a system?

Hi,
I am wondering if it is possible to get a SatNav that does ALL the following:

1. Recalculates a route quite quickly without saying "Do a U-Turn when safe" for 30 minutes if you ignore its route.
2. Takes account of realtime traffic and recalculates a bypassing route.
3. Interfaces with a Blackberry 8700.
4. Alerts on Speed Cameras.

Text to Speech would be quite good too but not essential.

Not interested really in mp3 players etc etc.

So, does the above unit exist?

Apologies if this is yet another newbie "Which shall I buy" post

The TomTom 720 does all of the above except interface with a Blackberry. We've just taken delivery of two 8800g's so will be investigating connectivity with BB handsets.

What else other than the TT720 would I have to buy to get all these features?

ie How does the traffic stuff work?

Hi Orville,

The Garmin Nüvi 660 -

1. Very quick, never let me down.

2. As with other Sat Nav's, this isn't always that accurate.

3. According to the Garmin site they connect to the Blackberry.

4. Using PGPSW database - very accurate.

Does text to Speech.

Can store music and audio books.

On TomTom in the UK, Traffic is received via your mobile phone which obviously won't work if you can't pair the Blackberry.

For Garmin they us an accessory FM Antenna to collect the traffic data so a Garmin may be a betters solution for you.

When using a Garmin it is updated from software found on the Garmin site.

Free - "Web updater" gives you all the latest software and "tweaks", these are not automatic, you need to watch out for them, but always details on this forum.

Free - "POI downloader" is for adding POI's and that includes the PGPSW database (chargable, see below) found here on this site.

The PGPSW database is £19 a year and includes as many downloads as you wish, if you extend your equipment (other sat nav's) this falls within the same price - good value.

I have never used the Garmin speed camera database as never seen the point, when you get extra help here on the forum via other members thrown in for free.

Just to make it clear, The PGPSW POI database is Free and the PGPSW Camera database is chargable

And as an update, I can confirm that the GO 720 connects to the Blackberry 8800 without any issue.

Has anyone had success recieving traffic info with a 720 via blackberry 8800?

Can get device to piar for handsfree but cant get wireless data to connect.

Have spoken with TomTom support who have said that feature is nott officialy available for the 8800.

I find it strange that i can pair for handsfree but not for data, i do have a data tarriff so is not a problem with phone, least i dont think so.

I'm having trouble getting my PLUS account released so I can test with the 720 and my 8800. At the moment it appears to poll for data and then errors with a message that PLUS Services are tied to another device. This suggests that it will work when I can get the account released.

Hi Darren,

Obviously i am very interested in the outcome.

Sounds as though you are managing to get the tomtom to see the data connection. I havnt purchased the PLUS subscription yet as i want to see the tomtom can get the data connection 1st.

I have a colleugue who has the same phone and a TomTom one, he has bought the Traffic service only to find that handsfree isnt even supported with that model. So chances of pairing for data services are even slimmer.

Who do you use for the data connection? I am on 02.

I have tried these settings and still the TomTom cant see the data connection.

Try getting the Weather or Buddies to work as these require a data connection but not subscription, this is a free way to ensure your device is working with GPRS data before paying any cash out.

Also you mention O2 is this contracted or Pay as You Go? the later is known not to work, with O2 only contracted phones have true internet access via GPRS. If contracted you may need to phone O2 to have the handset enabled for GPRS as they are not supplied with this enabled by default - Mike

Hi Mike,

The blackberry is contracted GPRS use it for email ect.....

Also i can browse the internet fine from the device, does this prove i have data connection, i thought so though may be wrong.

I will try the weather service now, though am not to confident as the TomTom reports it cannot even see the data service

Orville follow the link from my post above and see if your phone is listed -
if not then more than likely there will be an issue.

OOPs - sorry my phone is an 8100 not an 8800 - though they are very similar in functionality.
