After many requests we have finally decided to create an Off-Topic Forum. The discussion of non-GPS related subjects is permitted here but standard etiquette and forum rules apply. This forum is still moderated and any rude, offensive, insulting or otherwise inappropriate posts will be deleted or edited as we deem necessary. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Some of the more recent "Off Topic" subjects which were "hot" on comments, hence this new area, have now been deleted by the poster, so the entire thread is now meaningless.
Can this area be made so the poster can't EDIT it, or is that not practical?
If the original poster decides to censor him/herself later, this area could turn out a waste of space. _________________ TomTom Go 60

It's a pity that phpBB doesn't have a time limit on the edit facility. One of the reasons we were so against allowing edit at all was because of such an issue.
We can though prevent edit permissions on this particular forum, I'll implement that and see how we go _________________ Darren Griffin |

Darren, thanks to you and the team for deciding to create this area I think you have done the right thing.
Hopefully this area can help nurture a community feel amongst the forum members without detracting from the high quality discussion about everything GPS and Speed Camera related in the other areas.
I'm not that familiar with phpBB but I presume that threads which completely lose their way can be moved here? _________________ Gone fishing! |

Yes indeed, if it wanders drastically of topic and sparks a debate we'll hive it off to here. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Hang on, hang on. Hadn't someone better take THIS thread OFF topic soon else you'll have to move it to another part of the forum.
First complains about off topic stuff in the forum and now an ON topic thread in the OFF topic forum. I'm so confussed.... I'm going for a lie down.....

I'd like to think we've always had a community here but I take your point, now you can stay to chat after the 'work' bit has finished! _________________ Darren Griffin |

phpBB is the forum software we use, it's the most common forum software available. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Sorry, I didn't mean to suggest that there wasn't a good community feel here already - overall this a very friendly and useful forum!
Just saying that people can now chat here a bit more socially rather than talking "shop". :D _________________ Gone fishing! |

And not being shouted at, rapped across the knukles with a ruler and "locked" in at the back of the class.
We have now got freedom for a discussion (with no Edit).
Well who is going to start the first thread?
We have been able to start an "Off Topic" for 30 hours and no topic has appeared yet.
What non GPS related subject is going to be first? _________________ TomTom Go 60

No Edit, who suggested that?
I can't spell knukles = knuckles. _________________ TomTom Go 60

I suspect when the community at large eventually finds us here in the 'back of beyond', conversations will start flowing freely... and those conversions will be indexed for search by Google et al... and those that search those conversations will join in. Many of those searchers will have little or no interest in GPS, but undoubtedly will spill over to the main forums.
So soon we will see an increase in the very basic of questions from newbies in training that have never even picked up a satnav in Dixons.
This should bring some visitors asking their first, what they might feel, 'stupid' question. I'm sure you'll all welcome them to the fold with open arms and, with lots of patience, convert them to the joys or otherwise) of GPS
My first off topic question is about Internet communities in general. Does anyone have any insights/evidence/thoughts on the way the web itself is progressing through social networking, blogging and forum sites?
Please discuss (or ignore) and feel free to veer pointlessly off topic _________________ Robert Brady |
