I’m hoping to go to Jersey again soon for a holiday. OK, I know that Jersey isn’t a country but the idea’s the same. At the moment there’s no TomTom map data for any of the Channel Islands and it doesn’t look like there will be in the near future as I’ve emailed both Tele Atlas and TomTom and they’ve replied in the negative.
I’m sure that one day the Channel Islands will get mapped, so whilst I’m over there I’d like to get some POIs done in readiness for that day. Is there any reliable shareware (or better still freeware) that I can use with my current set-up (for details please see my signature at the bottom of this post), to create either OV2 files or ASC text files that contain Longitude and Latitude and a text description for the POI?
As an aside, I use Streetmap to obtain longitude and latitude for creating TomTom POIs for mainland UK. Does anybody know of any websites that cover the Channel Islands (especially Jersey) to full street level and which also gives longitude and latitude details?

Try using Mapopolis.
You can download the software for free, you only pay for the maps. However you can try the maps free for 9 days and the whole of the Channel Islands is one map, and very good too. You may be pleasantly surprised. You can add your POI's before you go, or in this case landmarks. I tried the Isle of Man maps and they are spot on with street level mapping for the whole Island.
The program runs very quickly too with very fast routing solutions, much faster than TT2. I may consider Mapopolis next time an upgrade is on the horizon.

Eagle,
Many thanks for the suggestion of using Mapopolis. I downloaded the program and the trial map data for the Channel Islands as supplied by Navtech. I think that both the program and the map data are stored on the RAM. I’d rather have the map data on the storage card. I found the link to the manual in the Mapopolis forum. The manual looks well written and useful.
Initial reaction is that the whole package looks very good. It is very different to TTNav2 but that just means that I have to learn a new product, which will be fun! I shall look forward to the challenge of mastering Mapopolis. The price of $12.95 USD is reasonable at roughly £7.00 GBP plus currency conversion charge.
Looks like I will be looking through all of the old posts in the Mapopolis forums to read up on the software!
If Navtech can produce the data, why can’t Tele Atlas do the same and thus supply the data to TomTom?
