I have a Garmin i3, which I bought mid 2006. Anyway, since October/November 2006, when I switch it on, it tells me it's out of date. I have followed the instructions it tells me too, but can't seem to get anywhere.
Do I have to just get rid of it and buy a new sat nav? If so I'm a bit annoyed, as I've maybe just had it a year. |

Oh right. Well it's not the message that bugs me, but the fact that it says there are new maps available, yet I can't seem to be able to get them? |

You have to pay for the unlock code for the new maps. It is not essential to upgrade to the new maps every year. |

Well, that's a bit off . I buy a sat nav, and there are new maps 10 months later. I'm going to buy a TomTom next time I think. |

But as I understand it TomTom operate exactly the same system. New roads get built etc. so the maps need updating; hardly a surprise. Garmin have to pay the mapping supplier Navteq) for the new maps and they pass the cost on. I don't buy a new road atlas every year and I don't intend to buy mapping updates every year either. |

My brother bought a TomTom, and they updated the maps, and as he hadn't had it a year, he got them for free.
Oh well, I will stick it up on ebay later on I think.
Many thanks for the help. |

Surely it's a good thing that they issue new maps every year. You don't have to buy them if you don't want to

If the updated maps City Navigator NT Europe V9.02 were avalible (Sept 2006) when you purchased your unit, then the unlock is free of charge..
ie if you purchased your i3 after September 2006 Then it should have the latest maps otherwise you are entitled to a free update to V9.02 (the current maps software.).. |
