PostPosted: Thu Mar 01, 2007 2:06 pm    Post subject: Nuvi 350 - Risk loading speed camera POIs? Reply with quote

I have noticed several posts concerning Nuvi models being disabled after attempting to load pocketgpsworld speed camera POI files. As I am about to attempt to load these files on my N.American purchased Nuvi 350, I am wondering if there is a significant risk of damaging my Nuv. I really don't see why this should have happened to some people as the files look like very normal POI files, when viewed with MS Excel. Maybe the problems encountered were coincidences, given the many thousands of Nuvis that have been purchased and probably a good fraction have had the pocketgpsworld speed camera POI files loaded.

Any words of wisdom on this regarding any possible risk?

Thank you

Despite initial comments, no one has confirmed to me that they have corrupted their Nuvi with just the PGPSW Speed Camera Database - it is only when you add large quantities of other POIs as well where it causes a problem.

Many people have installed the speed camera from here without any problems, and many have also added the POI data from www.garminpoi.co.uk as well as the speed camera data without problems - it's simply if you add too many categories from the POI data where problems have occurred.

Swing - Thank you for the quick reply. I am planning to load more than just the camera POIs. I currently have 8 other POI files in my POI folder. However, I suspect that these combined with the dozen or so poi and bmp files in the camara database, wouldn't be considered a large number. Does this seem reasonable?

Thank you

It appears it's the number of POI entries within the files, not the number of files that is the issue, if are you are below 25,000 then I would not expect any problems at all (based on my on experience).

Swing,
I, and others I am sure, always value your input into these forums. I realise the Mods are not always in attendance on here but there seems to be a complete silence about these POI's and broken Nuvi's. This is an important subject to lots of potentialand past users and Garmin have said nothing although they must have noticed a big return on their models with these booting problems. I emailed them over a week ago and nothing!
Why can't someone say something? Doesn't anyone care any more? Swing, do you have any influence?

hi doug,

i've said on various occasions that i have yet to see a problem with my nuvi 360 and have been unable to recreate the problems that a small proportion of other users have had...

what more is there to say?!

the "i3 issue" effected EVERY unit so it was easy to determine and 'fix' / educate users but this nuvi problem does not effect every unit so it's difficult to pin it down to anything...

Fair comment MaFt. It doesn't really concern me now as I have changed my Nuvi for a TomTom 910. It just concerns me, as a member, that Garmin have blamed this POI database for the problems in those units. I did load quite a lot of POI's from here to my unit before it crashed, changed it for another and because I did not recognise what the problem was and also did not realise it was happening to others, did exactly the same thing with the second one. Hindsight is a wondeful thing!
Just thought an answer from them might clear things up a bit. They have ignored my email about the problem. Some customer service!
Shame because I really liked the display on the 660.
Thanks for your comment
Doug

MaFt - can you confirm how many POIs you have installed onto your Nuvi? I don't think there is any issue with the source of the POIs, simply the total number installed.

I would be willing to perform some testing of this, but not on my Nuvi ;) If someone supplied me with a spare unit I'd be happy to work on the problem.

I would have expected it to break when you upgraded the firmware - not sometime after but... had you only just modifed the POI? I.e. was this the first time you reloaded the POI since the upgrade - you may be onto something .

i have some software from garmin for fixing it and am still testing but the issue seems to be a limit to the number of categories being loaded.

will report back in a bit...
