Can anyone tell me, is it possible to upgrade the GPS firmware on the O2 XDA Orbit? I find that getting a fix when navigating seems to take 3-4 minutes (yes, I am stationary). I would appreciate some feedback. Apart from this problem, the PDA/Phone is outstanding.

Many thanks for your help in advance,

Viper :D

Don't know about firmware but...

What happens if you...

1 take your phone outside with a good sky view and get a good fix (more than 6 sats)

2 turn it off and wait 15 mins

3 take it back to the same place and turn it on again.

Is the "time to fix" reduced - I would expect it to be around 15 secs under these conditions.

3-4 mins is reasonable if you have moved the phone since last turning off the GPS function. (It depends on how far you have moved.) Also if you are moving (i.e. in a car) the time to get a fix will be longer. Try to get the GPS turned on and getting a fix before travelling.

For major moves when off, or long time between use (several weeks) then it can be anything upto and over 15 mins depending on conditions.

Both my HTC P3300 Artemis and T-Mobile MDA-C-III achieve a sat signal lock within 10 seconds, quite often less than this (these are the same device as the Orbit to all intents and purpose). Make sure you keep the Quick GPS data upto date though as this can have a significant bearing on TTFF - Mike

Thanks for the reply guys. I do use the QuickGPS feature and make sure I keep this up to date. Does the SIM card need to be present when using QuickGPS? I've tried it both ways.

I totally understand what you are saying about the fix. As I said, it seems to take a lot longer now than when I first got the device (about a month ago). Weird but true.

Previously, I was using a cheap Bluetooth Receiver from Ebay on my Dell Axim X30 and it always got a signal within about 10-20 seconds. This was using a Fujitsu chipset. I thought Sirf-Star III was supposed to be very fast at getting a fix? I just don't see it.

Also, I can't get a signal at all in my bedroom now but when I first got the phone, I was able to connect up to 8 within a reasonable length of time. Perhaps there is some other software interfering somewhere? I might try a hard reset and see what that does.

Thanks guys Wink
