Assuming by "single category" you mean "Combined category"...
I had written out the whole process, showing how it works for me (See below), but I used the "Bank" category as my example. Everything works fine with that (see note about IE6 though).
But I just tried again with "Shopping" (as I'd offered to download it for you) AND IT DOESN'T WORK FOR ME EITHER. I just get a blank page when I hit "Download".
Quote: | Here's how it works for me with Firefox
I use Firefox 1.5 as my normal browser.
If I click on the little "+" sign beside a category (e.g. 'Bank'), it opens up to show all the subcategories 'Abbey' ,'Barclays' etc.)
If I click on the square beside "Bank", I get a tick in it AND in all the boxes for the sub-categories.
I then select "Combine subcategories into category file ", then click "Download" (I don't need to select "Show Link")
The download then apppears as "POIs.zip" and the two files inside are 'Bank.ov2' and 'Bank.bmp'
If I select "Separate files per subcategory" instead, the download is still called "POIs.zip" but now it contains all the seperate banks files ('Abbey.ov2', 'Abbey.bmp', 'Barclays.ov2', 'Barclays.bmp' etc.)
I've just tried it all again using IE6. Firstly, the page seemed very slow to load, and if I do exactly what I did before, this time the downloaded zips are corrupted.
However, if I click on "Show Link" and download from the next page it works. For some reason the zips are now called '16536_POIs.zip' by default, but both individual and combined options seem to work OK. |
So, having written all that out, it looks like I'm actually in the same boat as you.
Can you get it to work with a different category (like Banks)?
If so, there must be something wrong with the "Shops" category on the website. |

I only get that problem if I exceed 25 sub-categories in a combined File. _________________ Richard

So any luck tracking this bug down...
Whilst you are at it the zip files are corrupt when used with stuffit on the Mac however you open them, command line is OK. |

Is this relevant?
Quote: | 2) The selection does not work using Safari on an Apple Mac. The system works with Firefox and Camino on the Mac. The downloaded POI.zip file needs to be dropped into the Stuffit application, it gives an error if opened directly. |
(means nothing to me, little experience of macs) |

As a get-round, crazyhazy....
So long as you can download smaller combined lists (like me and oldboy can), why not do it in smaller chuncks and then merge them together with POI Edit? (http://www.poiedit.com/) |

Aha!
Lutz has already admitted there is a problem in nother thread, but it only occurs with the ov2 format.
Quote: | Use the Garmin format if you need to have the combined shopping category, and then use MakeOV2 to pack it up for TomTom. There seems to be some kind of memory limitation but we haven't found it yet. It only occurs when doing the MakeOV2 emulation. |
Mystery solved! |

Success(Well nearly)
The garmin workaround doesnt work for me,same problems, but I did have some success yesterday, managed to download 23 entries in shopping download in combined file using show link, this is the first time i have managed to do a combined download since the database started, not quite what i wanted but I am happier and shows that their is still hope. |

Cheers Andy, I have managed to combine them using POI Edit - I dont have any problems downloading all of them at once in single file format, by the way does anyone know where I can get the bitmap images they use for the combined catagories? _________________ Graham

That is why I said "however you open them", as you still get the corrupt message with direct opening or dropping onto the stuffit application.
There must be an issue with the app that is creating the zip files, never seen this problem before... Maybe a file size issue in the headers sent to the browser, if it's slightly out the file would not be complete. |

We never found out if you can successfully download "small" combined files.
If so, you could download "shopping" with just one shop selected and get the icon that way. |
