I make no apology for repeating a useful link which can also be found HERE
Please read MOSTDOM's post
This site has a very usefull set of safety camera POIs for Holland, Belgium, France, Spain and Portugal to supplement those cameras you can get from PGPSW.
Have a look at the site HERE _________________ Gee-Pee

Hi Gee Pee
I have read on many a post including this forum that it is illegal to use speed camera monitoring in France. (Don’t all shout at once), I have a Cobra detector, so I am fully aware of the difference that most GPS systems do not detect speed cameras, but give you the location only.
This is one reason that I don’t bother with the POI Camera data base. My foreign languages are not that fluent, so instead of having my GPS confiscated by an irate European police officer from whatever country, because I cannot communicate to him that’s it’s only a GPS and not both, I prefer to leave well alone.
I thought I would just mention it, just in case, that our latest members and readers are none the wiser.
Regards

You are quite right to mention it, DRP. I understand that it is not illegal (In France) to have POIs for speed cameras but it is to use speed camera detectors but I'm not sure that the French traffic police know that! Luckily, I take my own interpreter with me and she can charm even the traffic police (usually). I think if I were travelling through France, I could well not load the French POIs (they are all seperate), so warning taken ...and I'm sure other Forum members will take heed also. Thanks. _________________ Gee-Pee

I am in agreement with you both about the risk of being caught which in itself would be awkward because of the language barrier. May I also remind the avid readers that most of europe don't yet show any intention to paint their speed capture devices in bright colours so you can see them, but instead paint them any which way so that you don't see them!
Is it now worth not having the database loaded! _________________ Dom

Hi mostdom
In Holland I have seen blue, grey and yellow. France grey oblong boxes, on the side of the road, but they do give you good warning signs.
Or you could try this one. Travel at the indicated road speed and for the type of vehicle or outfit you are driving.
In other words DON’T SPEED.

Hi mostdom
I have not ventured into Switzerland for a long time?
I assume that it is illegal to have Swiss camera POI’s as they are slowly being removed from download centres.

Dave, I have sent you a rather lengthy Swiss Government document by email regarding the use of Camera POIs in that country. Basically, they are illegal!
A short quote here for all forum users.
Quote:
Entering Switzerland with a GPS device.
When entering Switzerland, people who have a GPS device in their possession must ensure that it does not contain any warn POIs concerning Swiss road traffic controls (mobile or fixed speed measurement devices, traffic light cameras, general police controls, etc.).
sic!
So the message is, if you have Swiss speed camera POIs on your GPS when entering Switzerland, disable them at the border of entry _________________ Gee-Pee

Having now read through the whole document, I now find that not only is it illegal to use speed camera POIs, it is also illegal to carry a device which has them loaded, so disabling them is not sufficient You must actually delete them from the device and this is spelled out very clearly.
Beware the Swiss traffic:PCP _________________ Gee-Pee

The verdict is still out with Swiss poi's. Although in january they outlawed the use of camera databases and have removed a list of poi capable gps devises from swiss shops, people have already aired thier views.
This includes the gps companies, obviouly a bit miffed at loosing potetial sales, and at the suggestion thier products are in some way illiegal, are asking the swiss highways agancy why they did it.
This is certainly one to watch! _________________ Dom

Agreed, the Jury might still, well be out but in the meantime be aware as it is currently illegal. The document I quoted from was issued on 7th Feb this year by Eidgenössisches Departement für Umwelt, Verkehr, Energie und Kommunikation UVEK. _________________ Gee-Pee

Is it MaFt that cares for the PGPSW database?
I should make a point to temporarily remove the half dozen or so swiss cameras in the euro database.
I'm sure that one of the Moderators has already seen this, however if you want to link this thread to the Pocket GPS Speed Camera database forum, then feel free. Good suggestion _________________ Gee-Pee

Could you not just install these POIs onto the SD card and then take the card out when it is not legal? This should be the same as uninstalling rather than disabling...
