Hi all,
My girlfriend bought me a Garmin Streetpilot i3 for Christmas from the Carphone Warehouse. It was obviously brand new and came in a sealed box. The documentation on the box stated that it was 'Streetpilot i3 with CityNavigator Europe NT'. The only CD which was included with the box was USB Drivers. There was also a 256mb micro SD card.
Upon turning on the device, it did not go through a setup screen as described in the user guide (setting language, date, etc) - it went straight to an error message which I couldn't seem to bypass. I typed this error into Google and it seemed the only way round it was to reset the device by holding in all 3 buttons on the front. I did this and the device then started properly and I was able to proceed through the normal setup.
I now have it set up but it doesn't appear to have the proper maps. My friend also has a Garmin i3 and his maps are extremely detailed, he gets an index of postcodes, addresses, etc - I have very little on mine apart from main routes and there is certainly no index of addresses, etc.
Also, when I start the device I continually get the message "To use this unit map data must be installed. Instructions are located in the enclosed setup guide" - however there is nothing in the enclosed instructions about loading map data.
I have spent hours on the Garmin website but am highly confused. The instructions with the product are quite poor in my opinion and don't tell you what to do if your maps don't appear to be working properly. There doesn't seem to be any mapsource CD with my product and I can't find anywhere to download it; the only mapsource product I could download was an update which tells me 'Previous Mapsource not found' when I try and run it.
1) Do I need to download an original version of Mapsource?
2) Is it possible the reset wiped my maps from my SD card?
3) Does anyone have a simple FAQ or manual which makes things a bit clearer for me?
I've used the search function but can't find anything relevant to my problem.
Thanks

the reset won't have wiped anything from the memory card.
best bet would be to take it back to the shop for a replacement.

I've tried that loads of times but to no avail.
Just read a few more threads there and from what I can gather (and I might be putting 2 and 2 together to make 5 here!) it seems that all I'm seeing is the base maps which are loaded into my i3 anyway - none of the additional information which should be on my 256mb SD card is appearing.

Ok lets pretend for a minute that my SD card has lost it's maps and any other data.
I understand that I can't use a different SD Card in my i3 because of the encryption on them, but surely I could copy the contents of my friend's working card onto mine (with a card reader) and it would then work in my i3?

No sorry. The maps are locked to each individual unit. |

Also the SD (SECURE Digital) cards are very hard to copy successfully. |

the maps are locked to the individual sd card that they were installed on, rather then the unit.
i can put my sd card in my brothers i3 and it works fine but if i copy the map files over to the card then it doesn't.

Thanks for your responses.
Just off the phone from Garmin and the agent advised me to remove the SD Card WHILE the unit was turned on - this did not flash up the error message that he expected (nothing happened at all), so it may be that my i3 has a fault slot and is not reading the card properly. Will have to send it back I think

Ah. I thought it was the unit hence you had the unlock codes which are individual for each unit... |
