Nuvi 310D - Custom POIs - Proximity

Hello All,
I' ve recently become the proud owner of a Nuvi 310D.

The PGPS camera database is in and working well.

I've setup (using POI loader) about 3000 custom POIs. These POIs are all over the place - many are nowhere near the road.
I've set the proximity alarm to 5000 ft which is just under a mile. I was hoping that, if I got within 5000ft of the POI, I would get an alarm.
It doesn't seem to do what I want. It only gives me an alarm if the POI is close to the road - then it gives me a warning long before I reach it (which suggests that the proximity alarm distance is OK, but only works when the POI is on the road).

Do you think this is 'working as intended'?

Any ideas or explanations would be appreciated.
