to be honest you looking at a pda option or something like a megellen device if you want both on and off road gps use somthing like a garmin nuvi is only designed for on road navigation

have a look at something like an htc pda-n

or if you want a phone on the device somthing like an htc artimis or t-mobile compact 3

Have a look at the Garmin Quest. It claims to give "up to" 20 hours of use but you can't remove the battery so when it's dead you might be in trouble.

It doesn't have a touch screen but they are waterproof and have a good off road navigation facility which is useful for walking, boating or flying.

There are other Garmin models which are suited for off road use, take a look at their website.
