Hi

If there is already a forum to suggest enhancements then apologies for starting a new entry.

Could anyone advise if GPS World have a forum for enhancement suggestions.

My wish for an enhancement is to allow the 2 character and the 6 or better still 10 digit Ordnance Survey grid co-ordinate to be used within the navigation function. This would prove useful as a keen walker since walkers tend to use the OS system rather than longtitude/latitude.

If any reader has suggested this and heard back from Tom Tom I would be pleased to hear what was said.

This would be a local request, right? OS grid is not used anywhere else, and TomTom sells in quite a few countries.

TomTom is a street navigation program, OS is used for outdoor use. The two don't compute.

Thank you for your quick reply.

Yes, the enhancement suggestion would I guess be a local request - local to the United Kingdom.

Whilst I appreciate that Tom Tom is a road based navigation system and walking across country using GPS technology is best suited to other navigation systems ( I have a Garmin for this ) it would be very handy to use a Tom Tom to reach the initial car park meeting point for walks.

Walk groups I have used in the UK - be they a part of the national Ramblers Association or otherwise will tend to use an OS grid co-ordinate for the walk starting point, this tends to be a car park directly besides a public road.

OS grid positions for the UK take the format XX ##### ##### where XX are 2 characters and ##### ##### represent West-East and North-South. SU 00000 00000 being West of Wimborne Minster near the B3078 road.

I would have thought that all that is needed is the input interface and an initial transalation of the British Grid, SU 00000 00000 being 50.79964 degress North, 2.00132 degrees West and then a mapping equating the Grid number to the long/lat values.

With a limited number of OS grid characters used in the UK I do not think the facility would require much overhead, it would not even need to be on the maps themselves, just within any data file to be held on the SD card.

I hope this clarifies the logic of the enhancement.

Why not just convert the OS grid reference into lat & long. I am sure that there is a bit of software that will do that - it is just a case of waiting for a real expert to tell you where you can get it from.

You could try this http://www.obliquity.com/astro/osgb.html

I have not tried it but it looks like the right thing.

Cheers

Thanks Paul and Peter

I have tried the site and it looks like it will do the conversion.

Being able to just enter long/lat details is a handy option when often walk meeting places are fairly remote.
