Map update notice coming up

My I3 has started coming up with the Map Update Notice when I switch it on now, saying the maps are over a year old (only had it 6 months) and I should update them - how do I know which version maps I have and how do I go about updating them? and is there any way to stop getting the message every time I switch on! (Have tried the web updater but just updated the s/ware to v3.2)
