|
|
Has anyone ever received a £50 reward for reporting a speed camera? How do you know if you are the 1st to report a new camera position.
I recently reported 3 new cameras that were not recognised by my B2. I was told they had been informed of them already, but it would have been nice to have some feedback or confirmation as reassurance.
Also, there are no mobile cameras in the B2’s database, I know of one that’s in a regular position and well known by locals, why can’t this be stored, even better why can’t mobile one’s be downloaded? (Not just waypoints)
ps
Mmm did I post a similar message already? |

Nope, never heard of anyone being paid for any speed camera additions by most of these companies.
One thing I really like about the Road Angel is that you can add your own personal cameras and also not have them wiped when you download an update, this was more of the clencher for me when going for a GPS based Speed Camera Detector. |

In fact, looking at http://www.ukspeedtraps.co.uk/campar1.htm it would appear that only Morpheous offer a £50 reward. Origin are listed as not offering any reward, which might explain the lack of money from reporting cameras with your B2 |

As swing stated, I don't believe origin actually offer a financial reward for a new camera. Morpehous do (or did) but they are alone in offering this incentive. _________________ Darren Griffin |

With regard to Buckrogers comment, I was under the impression that known and established mobile sites were included in the GPS databases.
Am I wrong?? _________________ David |

Not quite, In the case of Origin's b2, it does not store GPS locations for mobile sites but relies on Laser or Radar detection to alert you.
Thinking of it from the manufacturers point of view, unless a mobile unit was in location when their survey team visited they would have great difficulty in verifying the location and the possibility of unverified data being added to the database would risk it's accuracy. We have much the same issue with our free database. _________________ Darren Griffin |

Don't know how regularly they get updated, but I remember the Road Angel warning all of the mobile cameras on the M25 Hertfordshire stretch near the M11 during the summer. |

I think we're referring to Safety Camera Vans when we say 'mobile sites' as opposed to trailer mounted Gatso's that are put in certain locations such as road works for a few weeks or months, these certainly are in most commercial databases :D _________________ Darren Griffin |

Hello Darren,
I don't want to be accused of splitting hairs, but my understanding of mobile sites is not just the regularly used locations of Specialist camera vans. In Scotland, these vans have appeared only fairly recently, where as there are various sites where police traffic cars regularly operate with hand held and dash mounted cameras.
In Northern Ireland, where I regularly visit on business, I think there are only 3 permanent cameras in the whole of the province, but there are camera signs on many roads and I've seen police cars with hand held cameras.
So I understood that regularly used "mobile" sites were included in the GPS databases, but I'm now a little confused. Further more, if those mobile sites aren't included on the databases, and you're relying purely on the radar/laser detectors to pick-up those units when in use, then surely the b2 unit is currently inferior to something like the Snooper S6R Neo, which has the benefit of the database, laser detector and radar detector. _________________ David |

It's a fair comment but i was just trying to clarify what the manufactuers understand by 'mobile sites'. You're also not comparing like with like when you compare the b2 with the S-6R, the b2 is a direct competitor for the S-6, these both have the radar detector as an extra cost option.
My point was that it simply sin't possible to verify the reliability of a 'mobile location' submission as there may be nothing there to verify when the survey team visit.
our Safety Camera database has a number of 'mobile sites' logged in it but I don't see how we can go forward with this, there is no easy way of alerting the driver that it is a 'mobile' location and hence may have nothing there when you pass and this causes confusion to database users who report them as errors and this reduces confidence in it's accuracy. I can't speak on behalf of the manufacturers but we make no charge for ours so it will never be perfect, just as good as we can make it _________________ Darren Griffin |

Some areas actually publish locations of mobile cameras and where they are usually located, but there is no guarantee they don't operate in other nearby places.
Also I can confirm that Morpheous (Geodesy) do pay out and I have received quite a few cheques from them. I believe they have now reduced the rate from £50 to £20. |

I would expect these sites to be included in the database, as they are obviously sites they intend to target.
Although I agree the newer units have had the sense to realise that combining GPS with radar and laser results in a solution that can even handle the new mobile sites (and police cars parked wherever they feel like)
