Dave / Anyone else who can offer advice..
Have you got your X7 to review yet? I'm just about to receive mine, but by all accounts it will be no use for in car nav with my IPAQ, due to the pseudo Xtrac gubbins inside. Can I change the firmware to work as a normal GPS that is good for use as a vehicle navigator? I now have a dilemma - keep the 3970 with a Navman jacket & TT2, or get another BT GPS (assuming the X7 can't be made to work OK as a car navigator) to use with my new ipaq 1940 and TT2. What a good BT GPS for about the same money as my X7 is worth?
Thanks in advance for allowing me to pick your brains.

Unfortunately not, several of Rikaline's post bags got lost in the mail strike, we will get one as soon as they get their next stock of X7's in which should be within the next two weeks.
AFAIK the X7 is in XTrac mode, and won't work in standard mode. There are other BT GPS Receivers, but none as cheap as the Rikaline X7. Most come in at around £180 upwards. |

I was going to get the X7 but the lag issue has put me off a little. One thing I'm not sure of is if the lag is constant between all xtrac models? I'm currently using a Fortuna U2 GPS mouse that I believe is xtrac, and although there is some 2-3 seconds lag at driving speeds, it's not that much of an issue. As long as you can see the map you'll be able to know which turn you need to take.
I've actually gone for the Fortuna Clip-on now - got it for £146 inc. off ebay, just waiting for it to arrive. This is dual-mode so I can use normal sirf for driving and have the option of xtrac if needed. Coupled with the standard replaceable battery it seems like the best option for me! |
