I just got a new one after problems I couldnt resolve with my previous one.
Is it set to NMEA as default? My ipaq cant discover the services although it sees it.

Remove/ delete any existing connection that you may still have for the old unit within the BT manager.
Start the GPSlim236 and wait for 10 seconds before creating a new connection to the unit from the Ipaq, use the OutGoing Port, Passcode 0000 (if required), make sure you tick the serial port profile then connect to the device. Mike |

THanks for the reply, I did delete the old one first.
I get the message "The device does not offer any usable services. Please enable any desired services on that device or choose another one."
The serial port is enabled, didnt make any changes other than reboot the ipaq....
Maybe I have a DOA unit....

Before sending the 236 back as DOA you could leave the GPS unit switched on to flatten the battery, give it a good 48 (preferably 72 hours) before chargings the battery and trying again - the power removal will reset the device, if this doesn't work you will need to send it back - Mike |

You need a special cable for the PC, there is one supplied in some packages but it's only for charging the unit. It will most likely appear in windows as a malfunctioning unit or nothing at all.
Use bluetooth to connect to the PC (if you have a bluetooth dongle on your PC). |

So I emailed buygpsnow for the return, and they seem adamant that I did not do something right to connect.
The latest email said the PIN must be entered during discovery, I never remember doing this with my first unit. There is an option in the BT mgr to enable authentication with passkey but that wasnt even enabled with the other unit. Is it necessary? |

Hmm, you do need a passcode but it is 0000 (4 zeros) so maybe the BT manager makes a guess that it will be this and doesn't bother asking you to enter it?
Have a look at my post here to see if there is anything that helps. It's for WM 2005 though, maybe you have 2003. _________________ Gone fishing! |

I checked the box under BT settings- serial port to require authentication (passkey) and it still does not ask for the PIN. I was thinking there was a problem of having the other GPslim236 but I had already deleted that device.
I was able to connect using a laptop with BT and use gpsviewer.
I guess the problem lies with my ipaq, I guess I'll do more research on that end.... 8O |

Try using SirfTech - it has an option to hunt though all the port/baud combinations on your PDA and will recognise if the GPS is in Sirf mode rather than NMEA.
If you do change settings, be careful of the baud rate or you may get a Bluetooth / GPS baud rate mismatch and you won't be able to talk to the GPS. If this happens then you have to take the battery out for a while (maybe 5 minutes, maybe 2 days) to make it reset to it's factory defaults.
Good luck! _________________ Gone fishing! |

Hey thanks for that link Skippy. Once I did a hard reset my ipaq recognized it right away. I just had to reinstall Iguidance as well as re-synch all my data.
I didnt even have to enter the passkey.
My only concern is what caused the first one I had to go bad. I had bought it used on ebay and it worked great for about 8 months. I leave it on my dashboard all the time, I'm thinking exposure to the sun like that may not be the best for it. I'll try to mount it elsewhere as long as I still get a signal to keep it out of the sun.
Thanks for this forum! |
