voice crash

I have an IPAQ 3970 with PC 2003 v4.20.1081 and on boot is says 4.00 on first window. My GPS sleeve is made by Navman for Compaq and says IPAQ Navigation System vertically on right side. I have installed TomTom but when inia/lising, after going through selecting a language (English UK) then right left handed, miles/km etc on coming to the voice I do have a selection - pressing test gives a voice but when pressing "Select" the world goes dark but the pda hangs - forever until a soft boot is done.

Is the Tom Tom version you are installing a legitimate product or an illegal copy?
