On the newer models and updated software, there is the ability to input Buddies, and find their location. Is there any way that you could "buddy" with a friend, and then have that friend locate your satnav covertly if it were stolen. I realise that the new owner would have to link it to his phone for traffic info or hands free for this to work, but it seems better than nothing. |

If I understand the way the Buddies system works, at least on TomTom, every so often, your GPS sends a text messages to the GPS of your chosen Buddies (who, presumably, have to be using a similar model). You can track, on your GPS, the physical location of your Buddies. I can't see, therefore, why this wouldn't work to help track a stolen unit, except that thief/new "owner", could remove your Buddy from their list. _________________ Jock

As this system uses the GPRS connection via Bluetooth and a mobile phone you would need to have the lowlifes (thief) phone configured to track a stolen device in this way, not something I think that would work in practice - Mike |

GPS Systems do not bradcast their position from the unit (they just know where they are and apply that to a map) so there would be no way for one unit to locate another.

Another example of where i speak without fully knowing what i was talking about. My apologies. I didn't realise this was what the Buddies feature did - thought it was some sort of IM (Instant Messenger)!! |

You need to reveal your Buddy email address, which is the one you used to sign up to TomTom Plus. _________________ Tim |

Unfortunately some lowlife scum pinched my Nokia N91 on Tuesday so I can't play buddies until I decide what to get. I might wait for the N93 to come down a bit.... _________________ Tim |
