You are right there. The GIS data is pretty good and pretty cheap. The DeLorme software has vector data for topo maps. It is not difficult to imagine the transformation of this into a format suitable for handheld GPS devices.
To my knowledge the GIS data for the UK or Europe is not easily available. Certainly not in the UK at sensible prices for recreational use. I would however love for someone to educate me otherwise. _________________ Mike Barrett
