Being a bit of a numpty at computery things, can anyone please give me idiot prrof instructions on how to install a 256Mb SD card in my Tomtom One.

I have copied the contents of the old card into a new folder on my computer and thought (hoped) it would be a simple case of replacing the card and copying the contents back again, but all I get is an orange screen Sad

Many thanks for your help Smile

Use the TomTom software to backup and it would be that simple!

You backup from the one card, then restore to the other!

Though first make sure that your new card that you are going to put the new data on is formatted and empty Smile

That's what I am unsure of. It is empty (brand new) but how do I format one? Question

I tried the backup/restore method, but the screen wouldn't allow me to go any further. I restarte the computer and tomtom (though I had to press the reset button as it told me not to remove USB and the power button refused to work also Crying or Very sad

Thanks a million for your replies though Smile Really appreciate that Smile

Most brand new SD Card's are pre-formatted.

If you do need/want to Format connect to PC, either via the Device or a Card Reader, and in My Computer Right Click the Removable Drive. Select Format.

Did you copy the folder back (including contents) or just the contents of the folder? Common mistake is to do the former, which means the files arent set out the same, eg you started with

SD card
files
directories
files in directories

copied all that to a folder, which I'll call backup, and if you copy that folder (with its contents) back you end up with;

SD card
'backup folder'
files
directories
files in directories

Does that make sense? And did you do that? I hope so as ist easily fixable! As another poster said its extremely unlikely you will need to format you card and you may well end up making things worse if you do!

Another common error is that not everything got copied, did you have 'show hidden files and folders' selected in explorer when you did the copy?

Still struggling here - sorry Rolling Eyes

I copied the contents of Tomtom to an empty back-up folder. I would copy these contents back again to the new SD card (not the actual folder plus contents).

But... when I put the new SD card into Tomtom, I get the orange Please Wait screen with the don't-you-dare-pull-the-USB-cable-out image.

I cannot format it as the removable drive disappears from My Computer.

I cannot switch off Tomtom now (have to use reset button underneath), before I can remove the USB and/or SD card. Sad

The SD card came off ebay but presumeabley they are all the same - I don't have to buy a special Tomtom SD card do I? Confused

Sorry to be such a nuisance.

As I can't edit my post - the whole thing comes down to the PC does not see Tomtom in my computer as a removable drive once the new SD card is in.

Printer does not have SD reader.

I am beginning to wonder whether it is a faulty SD card. It was quite cheap and has no maker's name on it. I suppose it is possible this is at fault.

My brother has a camera with SD card so I will contact him and see if he can read it and either prove or disprove this theory Smile

TomTom say you need a card with a FAST transfer rate. Not any one will do. I'm sure if you do a search for "SD card" you'll find the details and some recommendations for brands.

Thanks Andy that has been really useful. Just been looking at the other topic and thankfully, I had already ordered a Kingston card! I will let you know the outcome when it arrives :D

The Kingston card seems to be fine (though I did have to use a different USB port on the computer after the first only recognised tomtom once).

Thanks for all your help.

Now got another question for you once I find the right place to post it ;)
