Maps are never free.
each map goes in their own subfolder, and in TomTom you can then switch maps.
TomTom does not support cross map routing, but has a variety of pre-cut maps , including complete maps of Europe and North America.
What device(s) are you considering? _________________ Lutz

The Maps that TT produce are the same for each Device, as Lutz said in his reply. Therefore they can be used in any TT Device, except the Rider.
If you are thinking of getting more Maps, from where ever, they will need Activation.
I'll be naive and assume you have a PDA and a GO and have Maps for both. One has gone wrong and you want to put both Maps on to the one Device.
If they are different Countries they can be put into their respective Map Folder, and that's the only way they will work. _________________ Richard

with regards to the map activation, that means i cannot transfer maps of one device onto the next? what happens if the maps have been activated already. Can i transfer them or is that breaking T&C or something like that?
When you turn your gps on does the device register with tom tom? how does tom tom know what version of maps you are using? what happens if they are corrupt and you wish to transfer of another device to fix them for the same country |

You do have the opportunity to Activate again after 7 days and then a further one time 180 days later.
If you were using both Maps on both Devices that would be breaking the T&C's.
When TT starts up it notes which Maps are there and if they haven't been activated will ask for the Activate Code. It doesn't need to know the Version of the Map (although in some cases it wouldn't use Maps from a previous Major Version)
A corrupt Map will probably crash the software. Transferring them to another Device would probably crash that also. _________________ Richard

From what people have reported, it seems a bit variable whether you are asked for activation code in this situation. You WILL very likely be asked when you next update the software or make another major change. |

Just to clarify this, although the Rider comes with a NavTech map as standard it does also work with TeleAtlas maps.
TomTom support told me that provided the maps are compatible with Navigator 5 and the Go series then they will work in the Rider
I took them at their word and tried it. I now have NavTech UK map plus TeleAtlas Maps of Wesrern Europe plus TeleAtlas US all working on my Rider. |

Just and update the maps have already been activated on another device which uses the same map format. If you then port these over to another device the activation does NOT appear at all. I updated the firmware in steps and tested, again the activation didnt appear. I updated to the latest and still no activation.
I guess if the map has been activated atleast once you will not have to activate them again. Failing that or tom tom activation works of numbers linked to devices because i can freely change between version 6 maps on my tom tom. Ive never tried a version pre 6xx to see if the activation appears.
Its extremely interesting as it means people who have the latest maps can freely swap share with other tom tom users and not have to bother about activation. I spoke to tom tom and they confirmed there is no record of which devices have which map version and any sort of lock to prevent them from using the gps.
the only service tom tom do keep an eye on is the PLUS service. |

This doesn't sound right. My understanding is that at least on the PNDs maps will always need to be activated.
What you may not know is that the actual activation information is stored on a flash disk inside the device. So even if you remove a map its activation information is still there. If you later reinstall that map it appears not to require activation, but in reality it just uses the key from the flash disk. _________________ Lutz
