Hello everybody, this is my first post, so I hope I am not asking anything too stupid but I am having a few problems here installing the latest update.

I received my email saying my subscription had now been activated about an hour ago, so I went to the speed camera download page and sure enough everything was set up to download. I then located the option for my Tom Tom 300, but no matter which version I select e.g single file or by type etc nothing is downloaded. It creates a 4K file on my desktop which then starts to create a zip file but then a message pops up about having failed to expand properly. There is no database as such being downloaded. My computer is running OS X 10.4.5 with Safari.

Assuming I am able to get the actual database somehow should I just drag & drop that data to the Great Britain folder as I did before to overwrite the files from the previous free downloads or do I need to delete those first?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Ashley

I've just tried this on Camino, FireFox and Internet Explorer without luck, but from IE I worked out that it appears to be downloading a PHP file. It looks like I'll have to dust off my ancient PC and try with that. I just saw another thread where some OS X users managed to download this with FireFox but I had no joy at all and I wonder if it might be associated with recent security updates or similar.

I am getting exactly the same problem on my PC now. Its just not downloading the database as it should when I click on the link. It asks me where I want to save the file but then its only about 100k when located as a zip on my desktop and comes up with an error warning if I try to open it.

The "camera type" file was 107kB and the speed-zoned version 115kB acording to Windows Explorer. So youur file sizes are about right.

I am going a little insane with this having tried now on the latest versions of FireFox with both PC & Mac, Safari, Camino, IE on PC & Mac and even Flock on the Mac as a desperate last attempt.

Every single time I find a small zip file which gives an error message when trying to open the zip file, possibly suggesting that the archive is corrupted. I tried temporarily disabling the firewall in case that was somehow related but to no avail and I can't remember the last time I had this much trouble downloading a file. It certainly wasn't at all difficult when the database was free.

Sorry if I sound a bit grouchy, but this just shouldn't be that difficult. I have to go out now for an hour or so, but I'll try again when I come back.

Indeed it should not and for 99% of downloads it isn't. Who is your ISP and would you prefer I email you the download in the shor term? If so, let me know which download you wish emailed.

Thanks Darren. My ISP is Nildram with a broadband connection and it would be great if you could email me the database in the short term. I am using a Tom Tom 300. Actually I was going to suggest that pocketgps would save a large chunk of bandwidth and possibly time as well if a mailing list of subscribers was set up so updates could simply be sent out as they appear via email.

I suppose the single download file would be the easiest. Would I be right to presume that in the POI I should disable all the current selections and allow the new files to overwrite them in the Great Britain folder. Then I can just select the one new POI which includes all speed cameras.

I have emailed you the file. As some file names changed in this release it would be advisable to remove any existing camera POIs before installing these.

I eventually managed to install the database, but only by redirecting the email you sent me to my PC where I was able to unzip it and install without problems. Earlier on I sent you an email detailing the issues I was having with the Mac and nothing has changed there. For the time being it is installed and working as far as I can tell, but none of this makes much sense.

I got the email. Not sure what to say, if the .zip archive worked on the PC then the archive isn't corrupt. I'm not a Mac user but Stuffit should open .zip archives without a problem.

Yes its strange because none of the previous attempts to download the database from the web site this morning would work properly on the PC. Neither stuffit nor Apple's own built in zip software could deal with any of the pocketgps files I tried on the Mac from this latest download but other other zip files including older pocketps files work fine.

I'm having similar problems unzipping camera database files on the Mac with both Firefox and Safari.

Unless you are using some very non standard software to ZIP up the files, I suspect that the Unix based underpinnings of the Mac might have a problem with the filenames in some way.

I did eventually manage to get Firefox to unzip the files somehow but it wasn't pretty.

Kim.

We now know that it's the method we use to create the .zip files 'on the fly'. For some reason Macs have a problem with these possibly because of the headers differing slightly. PC's are not affected.

Now we know the problem we can search for a solution!
