I just bought a Tomtom Go 500 and installed the great speedcamera database.

However, just noticed on Tomtom site that the software is now at version 5.420. Mine came with 5.201 installed.

I read on the Tomtom site:

"This update is not suitable for TomTom GO devices running applications based on the TomTom SDK (Software Development Kit). The SDK uses application versions 5.202 or 5.203."

I thought I read that the speedcamera database uses some sort of SDK kit?

If I update the software, will my database of speedcameras still work?

Am I getting confused with this SDK thing?

Also, is there any advantage in me updating my software anyway?

The display of the cameras and the warnings upon approach are core functions within TomTom and thus not affected by the upgrade. The capture of new cameras however (via POICapture) requires version 5.202 (which you don't have installed anyhow).

Being the optimists that we are we humans do believe that newer program versions are more stable, have less bugs, run faster, and have more features. So generally it is recommendable to upgrade. Sadly TomTom have a record of feature reductions and bug introductions... 5.420 doesn't seem to hurt but - as you mentioned - leaves out SDK compatibility which is a shame, and which prevents most of the SDK based functionality from working.
