I am totally new to Sat Nav so I am in a quandry.
As I am totally new I have no real idea which products are on offer with what facilities and how they vary one from the other. I know some systems use a laptop, some a handheld pda and some are all-in-one.
So
1. I cannot realistically specify in detail what I want as I have no idea what is the specification of the systems/models available.
2. I cannot find anywhere a more general description of the plusses and minusses of the products on offer and what they are best at.
Its no good me asking a simple question such as whats best for me as evveryone jumps up and down sayiong that with a A$ page specification of my needs answers cannot be given.
I am in a chicken and egg situiation - what comes first?
So here's my ignorant specification.
I want to travel around the UK and Europe visting places of interest. I want a simple to use system that never goes wrong and costs around £50. I have a laptop but its too cumbersome to use in the vehicle. It would be nice to use it on foot.
Now shoot me down or, preferably, get me started in the right direction so that I can offer you a realistic picture of what I want.
I am not so much interested in a make an model what I am intrerested in is the better approach - TOMtom - Navman etc. |

If that is really your budget, then forget it. It can't be done and you will have to stick to paper maps. A system to cover just the UK is going to cost around £150-£250, or a bit less if you already have a PDA or Smartphone to run the software on. Add another £50-£100 if you want to include maps of the rest of Europe. _________________ Kam |

I was trying to make a point between what I WANT and what I WILL actually have to pay.
I know what I would LIKE to pay (£50) but I want someone to tell me what I WILL have to pay (£300?) and what it will give me compared to other systems.
My budget could go to £300 or £400.
This is my dilemma - I have no idea whats out there. |

The more I look around the more requiremenst pop up.
I drive a Peugeot Boxer Camapervan 2.75 m tall and 2.4 m wide so these dimensions are a possible restriction.
I am interested in adding other data such as low bridges, narrow roads, speed cameras etc.

Cut out the stupid small text, what are you, eight years old :
I think you probably want something straightforward. What I suggest is that you go and look at the TomTom ONE unit, (in any Halfords, Dixons etc), get them to demo it and see if it meets your needs. If it does not then by all means come back here and tell us why it doesn't then we can come up with something better for you.
Oh and you are looking at £225 at least for the TomTom ONE, and that's about the minimum you want to look at spending. |

You should be able to get a good hard cover map book of Europe for £50.
Sat Nav systems with full European maps cost £350 plus. Watch out for the cheaper systems which only come with UK maps - the full European maps are an expensive add-on.
Take a look at Tom Tom, Mio or Garmin Street Pilot/Quest/Nuvi. Make sure you are getting full European Maps included in the price.
You will not find a system which never goes wrong. They all have their limitations and will occasionally direct you to drive down one-way roads the wrong way, take you on strange routes to your destination or not know about roads which have been recently built or redesigned. However, they work a lot better than a paper map.
Good luck! _________________ Gone fishing! |

Sorry MarkHeweet about the small text.
Earlier on I tried to emphasize a couple of words using capitals and what do I get - some imbecilic moran telling me not to shout.
So I played him at his imbecilic game and whispered.
When I joined this forum I expected to be able to communicaste with intelligent adults without any of the tantrums more akin to 5 year olds.
If I offend someone then it would be polite of them to explain my offence without offending me.
Well thats off my chest.
Can we return to the matter for which this forum was set up? |

I agree. I don't think we need to delve any further into the shouting/whispering side of things, so back to the matter in hand.

another idea is to check the pocket gps site again.
there were many posts advicing diff. people from where to start.
so
if u star with search of the site with the icon on top u should get somewhere.
other thing is it is netiquette that if u write in capitals= shouting (unnecessarily!)
so when u wrote in capitals somebody thought u were shouting! obviously u were not!!
so meet u after u have taken initail steps around!! 8) |

Having spent a short time looking around I am tempted by the Mio 168 as it is "an all in one" solution and easier to use outside the vehicle.
As I will be driving a motorhomes 2.75 m (9 ft) tall and 2.4 m (8 ft) wide I would like to be able to dictate which routes to avoid.
I understand that this was possible with Tomtom 3 but not with Tomtom 5. Would any other make of software be better for this purpose? |
