|
|
Hi, i've just bought a new Tomtom Go 500 and want to download the speed cameras onto it. I have tried to do this but am either incredibly stupid or my computer does not have the capability to do so. Can anyone help me?!
So far i have managed to download the zipped folder and unzipped it (this is an achievement in itself_! Beyond this i'm somewhat stuck! I have all the pictures (i believe computer literate people call these bmp's (thought don't hold me to that)?! But for some reason when i try to open up the Sdk Registry i can't get into the POI Capture.cap, tomtom.300.mnu or tomtom.700.mnu. It asks me if i want to "open with" and then list some of my........ erm files?! It might be worth mentioning that i can't see anything saying it's a ov2 file.
What am i doing wrong? I've connected my tomtom via the usb and have copied and pasted the pictures to it but when i switch the tomtom on and go into the "enable POI's it's not in there.
Please feel free to reply to me and patronise the hell by explaining things to me like i'm a 5 year old as it's prefarable to me throwing my computer out of the window!
Please take sympathy on me and help me!
Thanks |

Are you running the latest v5.42 system? If so, the SDK doesn't work with it. You need to get back to v 5.201, 5.2 or 5.1. _________________ TTGO 700 (dead)

You don't need the SDK capture stuff to just load the cameras.
Just download the camera info from the link in the column on the left. Ignore the .wav .xls .csv etc. and just use the .ov2 and .bmp files. _________________ TTGO 700 (dead)

You need these (from the various folders in the download package):
pocketgps_uk_gatso_20.ov2
pocketgps_uk_gatso_30.ov2
pocketgps_uk_gatso_40.ov2
pocketgps_uk_gatso_50.ov2
pocketgps_uk_gatso_60.ov2
pocketgps_uk_gatso_70.ov2
pocketgps_uk_gatso_tba.ov2
pocketgps_uk_gatso_var.ov2
pocketgps_uk_mobile_20.ov2
pocketgps_uk_mobile_30.ov2
pocketgps_uk_mobile_40.ov2
pocketgps_uk_mobile_50.ov2
pocketgps_uk_mobile_60.ov2
pocketgps_uk_mobile_70.ov2
pocketgps_uk_mobile_tba.ov2
pocketgps_uk_temp.ov2
pocketgps_uk_specs.ov2
pocketgps_uk_redlight.ov2
(plus their matching .bmp icon files)
Put them individually into your map folder, then activate them in the preferences menu. |

When you open My Computer you should see your TomTomGO as one of the attached drives, double click on it and then double click on the map directory. Then you need to copy the .ov2 and .bmp files you want from the directory where you unzipped your files, and onto the GO. And that's that!

The what?! What on earth are you trying to do there? Have you read the instructions? |

Hi sarahchr,
to the forum!

We don’t patronise or flame here, we try to be as helpful as we can, as we were all newbies once.
There are some guides that should be read (in the following order):
BTW, if the guides don’t make sense, or if they are plainly wrong then please let me know and I’ll rewrite them.
The beginner’s guide to the PocketGPSWorld camera database.
This explains about the different camera types and about categories and subcategories, so that you can decide how you want the database on your unit.
Depending on whether you have TomTom Navigator on a Pocket PC or TomTom GO, please read either:
How to install (camera database) POIs to TomTom Navigator 5.
This guide explains how to load the PocketGPSWorld camera database onto a Pocket PC running TomTom Navigator 5.
How to install (camera database) POIs onto a TomTom GO.
This guide explains how to load the PocketGPSWorld camera database onto your TomTom GO.
The above guides may look lengthy and complicated when first seen. However if you grab a cup of coffee and read each one thoroughly then they should make sense as they have been written in a step-by-step way, for ease of reading.

How about:
1) Slightly expanding the bit in the Beginners' Guide where after "Option 3" you say Quote: | There are almost an endless amount of combinations of the above. | to give a couple of practical examples, as it is a bit easy to miss.
E.g. something like - "If you are using a system with only around 30 categories, you may want to have the speed zoned Gatsos and Mobiles but the combined SPECS file, it's up to you."
2) Emphasise that you have to actually pick these files out from different folders in the download package
and
3) In the Install guides for the Go and Navigator, somewhere between "Step 1. Download the POI file" and "Step 3. Copy the POI files from your PC", I think it needs another reference back to the relevant part of the Beginners' Guide or some other way to remind people that at this point they have to decide which set of files they want to install, rather than just everything. |

Hi Andy_P2002,
Thanks for the comments. I am concerned about the balance between too little information and full head-on information overload.

I’ve already given three options form the single database to the, I was kinda hoping that people would see that it’s a mix and match option, from reading the first part. I did say:
Privateer wrote: | What PGPSW camera database categories do I need?
Well it is down to personal choice and the limitations of your SatNav package. If you were to stay in the UK there are 3 levels of options:
Option 1 (single file POI)
As stated above, this category contains all of the above categories, except for the Continental one. It is for UK users who have SatNav systems that can only use a limited number of POI categories at time:
pocketgps_uk_sc
Option 2 (5 main categories)
This is just the main categories and none of the subcategories that show speed limits:
pocketgps_uk_gatso
pocketgps_uk_mobile
pocketgps_uk_redlight
pocketgps_uk_specs
pocketgps_uk_temp
Option 3 (24 files comprising of both main and sub categories)
If you want the above but with subcategories of the Gatso, Mobile, and SPECS databases to show speed related cameras:
pocketgps_uk_gatso_20
pocketgps_uk_gatso_30
pocketgps_uk_gatso_40
pocketgps_uk_gatso_50
pocketgps_uk_gatso_60
pocketgps_uk_gatso_70
pocketgps_uk_gatso_tba
pocketgps_uk_gatso_var
pocketgps_uk_mobile_20
pocketgps_uk_mobile_30
pocketgps_uk_mobile_40
pocketgps_uk_mobile_50
pocketgps_uk_mobile_60
pocketgps_uk_mobile_70
pocketgps_uk_mobile_tba
pocketgps_uk_redlight
pocketgps_uk_specs_20
pocketgps_uk_specs_30
pocketgps_uk_specs_40
pocketgps_uk_specs_50
pocketgps_uk_specs_60
pocketgps_uk_specs_70
pocketgps_uk_specs_tba
pocketgps_uk_temp
There are almost an endless amount of combinations of the above. |
However, thanks to your comments, I have now added:
Privateer wrote: | 1. You can use a combination of speed-zoned sub-categories of one type with non-speed-zoned categories of another type, i.e. speed-zoned Gatso and Mobile with non-speed-zoned SPECS.
2. If you use speed-zoned sub categories use all of the sub categories (else you won’t get warnings for every site) and don't use the full category with the sub-categories (else you will get duplicate warnings). |
Andy_P2002 wrote: | 2) Emphasise that you have to actually pick these files out from different folders in the download package |
Good point! I’ve amended it:
Privateer wrote: | Alternatively, you can download the zipped file and manually copy the required categories to you SatNav system. If you wish to use speed-zoned categories then you will need to look in different folders in the zip file, they are in the "speed zoned" folder and then the "gatso", "mobile", "specs" sub-folders depending on your requirements. |

At the start of each guide for installing to a GO or Navigator, it is sugested that the reader referes to the camera database guide. If the reader doesn’t want to, then that is their choice as they know whether they are happy referring back to the camera database guide or not.

Fairy Nuff!
Thanks for that, and for putting up with me. (Only by re-reading your guides have I realised that I've just been posting the 'list of 18' all over the forums, having forgotten that the SPECS have recently been splt into zones too. ) |

No worries, I appreciate your time in reading the guides and letting me know how they look and how they can be improved. I can reread and rewrite all the time, but it’s only my view on the subject and I need feedback to ensure what I write works for people, especially the first timers! ;-)

Hence my little caveat at the bottom of each guide that states it is a living document as is subject to change!

hurrah i think i've done it, just got to go out and try it! It would appear i was downloading the wrong thing!
In case you're wondering this is what i was doing
From the home page;
Click on the picture of the Tomtom unit entitled "PocketGPSWorld.com launch POICapture for TomTom GO and PDA"
click on "read more"
click on quick navigation and download
click to download tomtom go5 poi capture add on.
After i downloaded the file none of the .OV2 files were attached?
Thankfully i think it's sorted now, thank you to everyone who helped me, i shan't be throwing the computer out of the window after all! |
