So I understand that the GPSlim236 requires a special adapter cable to do USB (GR230-A2).

And that what came in the box is just a "power charging cable", that is for charging the GPS using power from a USB port or USB power adapter.

My questions are
1) Is the "power charging cable" that comes in the box just a regular off-the-shelf USB cable? Or is it e.g. wired to only connect the power pins?

2) Is there any way to identify the "power charging cable" compared to other USB cables?

3) If I use a regular off-the-shelf USB cable instead of the "power charging cable", is there any risk of harming the GPS or the USB device (laptop, desktop, computer screen) that I plug into?

It would be great if this could be explained officially somewhere by Holux, e.g. in their FAQ.

Like probably many people, I have all sorts of cables of all types all tangled and jumbled together, including many USB cables, and quite frankly, I lost track of the Holux power charging one that came in the box. So I need to know whether there's actually any difference or whether what comes from Holux is just a regular off-the-shelf USB cable.

Welcome

I don't speak for Holux, but as far as I can tell it's a standard USB cable.

I have two Holux GPS units and I have never done any harm to them by charging using

1. standard USB cables
2. the mains charger that came with my phone
3. a cigarette lighter to usb adaptor in the car.

I know other people who do the same.

The special Holux data cable is different, it has a serial to usb convertor in it so you can get the GPS data on your PC although it still charges as normal.
