I am a little confused. Is the V2005 and V3 software the exact same? I have SmartST™ V2 and wanted to get the most updated maps for US. I can't find any place to buy the SmartST™ V 2005 software. |

No, 2005 is a later version than V3. It will be available shortlyas a software/data-only, apparently. _________________ Tim |

Tim, I am confused Elswhere on these forums, it is mentioned that the standalone software SmartST (2005) update is available at £29, yet when I go to Navman's website it is - it appears - only available with the updated European maps at £99. I have emailed Navman and they have replied that it is available on their website. I have again followed the URL they gave me but again I cannot find the place to buy.
Can you enlighten me - and others

The software and new data currently ships with the iCN520 and appears to be available as a standalone product for the iCN5xx series, as can be seen here.
It will be available for their other platforms in due course, or so I understand. _________________ Tim |

I'm afraid I have no idea about that offer, and can't see it on Navman's website. _________________ Tim |

Just had a response from Navman ie "The software upgrade without the maps is not available yet. We hope to have it available within the next month but do not have a release date at present.
Kind regards

Upgrade to 2005 with maps is available for the iCN5xx series only, at the moment. www.navman-store.com has the details. _________________ Tim |

According to a a number of people owning iCN520 and PIN570 with the new SmartST 2005 SW, there are only tiny changes compared to SmartST V3. SmartST 2005 seems to include a newer map release and some very small changes in the user interface. I haven't heard of a single new feature yet in SmartST 2005. I think it's fairly misleading to release a product with a new name but no new features. I wouldn't spend my hard-earned money on an upgrade from V3 to 2005 anyway. Hopefully the next SW release will include some of the features mentioned in the wish list on this forum.
I hope I'm wrong here...

The most important item I was interested in was the latest maps. I can understand paying for upgraded features but shouldn't updated maps be free or at least for a very small amount?
I have V2 of SmartST. I wanted to bypass the V3 and get the 2005 version. I would just get the v3 version if they had the latest maps.
....or am I incorrect and you can download updated maps? |

Paul2000,
There is an article put together by the great guys that run this forum. (unable to find at this time), that showed the complexities that are involved in getting map data ready for gerneral market release for each manufacturer. But very briefly, TeleAtlas, Navteq etc are the companies that create the base data that is onsold to Navman, TomTom etc and then these companies spend large amount of time converting this base data into their own map-data as well as POI's etc. The costs of this exercise would not be cheap, and hence the upgrade price for maps etc.
Linken it to the old "Street Directories" that as each edition comes out, you purchase the latest "Directory" to keep up with new roads etc. To expect free updates of these "Directories" was never an issue in the past. Sadly, these days many people don't appreciate what is involved in producing digital data.
Generally, I have found Navman very accommodating in giving an reduced upgrade price as opposed to the cost of buying the software/maps.
Best Regards,

Yes I understand there is a cost so it has to be passed to the customer. I would enjoy seeing just MAPS and not new features as an option as well.
So can anyone tell me if the V3 and 2005 have the same data? |
