I set out on a journey the other day using TTN5, and after calculating the route, I used 'Avoid Part of Route' to completely avoid the M25. I checked the route instructions, and sure enough, it had come up with a pretty decent route without going on the M25.

During my journey I stopped for petrol, and turned off my iPAQ, exiting TTN5 properly before doing so. When I set off again, and went back in to TTN5, it briefly showed 'Calculating Route', then I set off on the rest of my journey. Within 10 minutes I was on the M25........ Sad

If you exit the application and go back in, which part of the route does it remember? Just the departure and destination points? I assumed it remembered the last route you had selected, including any 'avoids'? It seems to me that it completely recalculates the route from scratch when you go back in to the application.

Cheers.

It is going to calculate the best route from your current location to your end location when you restart TomTom. If you had calculated the route using "avoid motorways" it would have re-calculated avoiding motorways.

As you have discovered, whilst it will remember the last active route it does not remember custom avoids etc.

But, voice_of_reason, WHY do you exit TomTom before you turn off your PDA ?

With my Medion PPC250 (wired GPS receiver), I simply hit the power button and disconnect the PDA, whenever I'm leaving the car, for any reason.

When I return, I connect the PDA and power it up.

TomTom takes a few seconds to re-establish communication with the GPS receiver (which is permanently powered in my wiring arrangement), then just carries on from where it was !

Occasionally, the 'Today' screen pops up, but hitting the hardware button I have set up for TomTom brings it to the front.

Is there something peculiar about your PDA or GPS receiver which means you HAVE to exit TomTom before turning off your PDA ?

I exit TT before removing my IPAQ from the vehicle becxasue a bug in TT5 means the battery will be drained in about three hours if TT is left running even though the device is switched off.

Oh dear ! - I wasn't aware of that problem ! 8O

But it seems it's more likely an interaction between TomTom and that particular make or model of PDA (rather than a pure TomTom bug), as I've never experienced my PDA battery quickly discharging whilst away from the car (even for the whole day or the whole weekend !).

I found that sometimes the PDA switches itself on, probably just to check Outlook or something and can then turn itself off again sraight away. The problem with leaving TT5 running is that it does not then turn off again as TT5 holds it, with the backlight remaining on. This soon discharges the battery. Just getting petrol, I just power down, and while this was a 'no no' with TT3 as it would inevitably crash, with TT5 it works well.

Thanks for the replies. I have to admit, I exit TTN5 before powering my PDA down more out of habit than anything else, as I've heard about all the problems other people on this forum have experienced if they don't. I haven't actually experienced the battery drain problem myself.

It's a shame TTN5 forgets the exact route you had planned if you exit the application. If that's the case, I'd rather it just cleared the route completely when you restart it, otherwise it's misleading, as I thought I was still going to be taken on my original route.

I guess the answer is 'don't stop for petrol' - which I probably won't be able to do without queueing for several hours by the end of this week anyway..... Crying or Very sad

When using an itinerary, it doesn't forget the route if you exit TomTom and switch off the power. When you next switch on, it picks up the route where you left off.
