|
|
I am going on holiday to Floriday next month. Whilst this is brilliant, I have now had my TomTom for 9 mnths and am completely dependant on it. I have noticed that there are US maps available for the TomTom so I assume I can take my trusty TomTom with me. But before I lay out 135 quid I thought I'd check here for comments and advice. As well as any hints or tips I would like specifically to know:
* Which map do I need to buy to cover Florida?
* Will the s/w automatically work for driving on the right?
* Will I be able to recharge the unit - it looks like my unit came with a US charger and a UK adapter?
* Any hints and tips people have found from personal experience?
Thanks in advance |

TomTom maps for North America. Individual city maps are available too (like Orlando) but there's a good chance those don't cover the area that you need.

yes. Remember, it's also used on the continent.

yes, all rental cars come with a 12V cigarette lighter plug - everywhere in the world. For charging outside the car you can use the supplied charger.
General hints: Trust your eyes more than the maps. Maps may not always be up to date, especially with the frantic pace of street construction over here. _________________ Lutz

I have just been to Florida and took my Tom Tom Go 300 with me.I bought the Maps of the USA and it worked really well.Obviously as with this country there are a few places where the maps have yet to catch up with the changes on the roads but overall it was pretty good.
We travelled to quite a few places and we always managed to find the places we were looking for and even navigated around a couple of accidents using roads I would never have dreamt of using following a conventional map.
One thing you do need to be aware of - if you rent a car from Dollar then you will need to take your mains adaptor as Dollar cars have the cigarrette lighter disabled in all their rental cars. |

I have noticed that there are maps available for the Navigator and Mobile Tom Tom on E-bay, will the maps work on a Tom Tom Go 300 if I copy them onto the SD card? |

Technically they will work. However if they are offered on eBay then it is highly likely that they are already activated, and you will not be able to activate them on your device.
Buying maps off eBay is a VERY bad idea. _________________ Lutz

Really? Is this a recent change by Dollar because we travel to the States at least twice a year, the last trip in March 2005, we always use Dollar and the cigarette lighter has always worked. Seems like a bum deal if they are because many booking agents/hirers are offering portable sat nav as an option for the car hire. |

I actually emailed Dollar to specifically ask this question and was told that it was policy with all their cars,so took my mains charger with me instead of the cigarette lighter adaptor.
So in fact went on what Dollar told me but never actually tested the lighter. |

Hmm. Emailed dollar and got this response:
"XXXX,
The cigarette lighters would be enabled as persons use them to charge their cell phones.
If you have any other questions, feel free to e-mail us.
Thanks

I guess the best thing to do is to take both chargers. I'm not sure my PDA would survive a 4 -6 hour drive without charge so the cigarette lighter working is a must! |

I've lived in the states my entire live and have never seen an car without a cig lighter/power plug. Granted, i've seen cars that have a broken plug! I seriously doubt Dollar, or any major car rental company would have such a problem. |

|
|
Hi everyone,
I just bought the latest USA maps from www.watford.co.uk, this is the version loaded on a 1GB SD card. I put the card into my Go 300 and on clicking "I agree" at the license page the TOMTOM crashes, after 30 sec or so it reboots.
Has anyone experienced similar things?
Thanks
Tim |

Since I am having trouble finding anyone selling the USA maps on CD in the UK, is there any reason why I cannot buy USA maps on the 1Gb SD card, transfer these to a PC using a card reader and then on to the TTG700 using the USB cable?? |
