Hi all,
I`ve been looking at a PDA/GPS In Car solution for a few days now and have found the info gained from these forums here very useful. Thanks!
I`m going for a Dell Axim/Haicom 303 combination, but then I realised I`d need a car mount (ouch! how expensive are these...)
I want to import a car mount direct from Seido US and it retails for 50 USD. I was just wondering - will I get charged import duty by customs (and will this be 20%ish) on top tof this in addition to carriage?
(I know that pocketanimal are a reseller but I need a vent mount version which they don't appear to have).
Any other ideas/hints would be appreciated. I hoped the car mount wouldn't cost that much but I think I`m looking at at least 40ukp just with a standard holder + standalone in-car axim charger cable so might as well go deluxe
Many thanks for any info, and hope this is the right forum.

A UK source for the Haicom HI-303MMF, if you hadn't already realised, is globalpositioningsystems.co.uk. I have a 303 and think it's brilliant. I know of just one drawback; there's no serial input in mouse mode, so you can only configure the GPS in CompactFlash mode.
For an import, the package is at least technically liable to import duty (no idea what rate this is chargeable on a mount; it may be 0%), then VAT on the combined total of the purchase price, import duty and shipping. On top of that, many carriers including, I believe, the Royal Mail, charge you a handling charge for them settling up with HM Customs and Excise for you.
I say at least technically - many report that parcels liable to duty and VAT can get through in the letter post without duty and VAT being charged. It's a risk, though.
An alternative mount, if you want a neat in-car solution, is to go for a Brodit mount - which is the solution I'm using with my iPAQ 3970. You can read this site's Brodit review here. I found Handnav pretty pathetic, and would recommend ordering direct from Nemesis GB, the UK distributors. You can find the part numbers you need from the Brodit site, and be aware that an active holder includes the car charger.
Expect to pay just under GBP50 for an Active PDA mount and a Proclip including delivery. You have to email Nemesis GB, but when I was giving up on Handnav (just before I did, they finally shipped long after they'd promised to do so), I emailed Nemesis GB and they were back to me with a quote and availability information within a couple of hours.

Thanks for the info and prompt reply.
I actually ordered the Haicom from www.globalpositioningsystems.co.uk a couple of days back - I had a technical query that was replied to in mins by one of their advisers (I think he reads these forums) and I think that always bodes well for a company.
And one of the main reasons that I actually picked the Haicom was your rave review and subsequent discussions in the forums
I will certainly have a look at the above suggestions, but looks like there is no cheapo way around this problem...
