|

I have always been frutrated when out on the road at no being able to navigate to the nearest Wi-Fi spot and collect my e-mails! So I have created a WI-Fi hotspot POI. I wont distribute the database as I dont want to break anyones copyright but here is how I did it:
1. download the the latest hot spots from BT Openzone : http://www.btopenzone.com/downloads/BT_Openzone_Hotspot_List.xls
3. Removed all of the non uk sites from the sheet and edited down the detail to leave postocde (minus the space), name & site operator
2. Bought the Navman postocde lat long database from http://www.poisoft.co.uk/ (thanks to Steve, he was very helpful).
3 imported all of the POISoft data in to one table in access.
4. imported the cut down BT data to another table in access.
5. created a querry to return the lat and long for the postcode in the BT table.
6. Exported the data back to excel
7. Sperated the data by site operator so I can have a seperate logo for BT, T-mobile, Cloud and Surf.
8. Did the rest of the stuff on BoPeeps ecellent sticky for creating POI and hey presto I have the overlays!
As soon as I can get my TT5 upgrade working I'll let you know how accurate it is otherwise it is back to TT3 for me!
Here are the logo's I created for each of the WiFi Operators, feel free to use them.

It works a treat! I am pleasantly surprised at how accurate the postcodes are and it has saved me hours in the car driving around looking for a hot spot! |
