Hi,

I am planning to purchase a serial cable primarily to connect my Acer N30 to Garmin GPS76. However, I am inclined to get a full (9-pin) serial cable (presumably with RTS/CTS handshake capability) for the Acer, to use with a normal Garmin PC cable. Then I can also use the PPC as a general purpose Terminal Emulator (similar to "Hyperterminal" on the PC).

But, are there any Terminal Emulator applications (preferably freeware :-) ) available for the PPC? If not, then maybe I should just get a simple (RXD/TXD), cable which would be cheaper and more compact for portable use with the GPS.

Thanks, particularly if you can point me in the direction of a PPC Terminal Emulator program.

Alan.

Hi,

Thanks very much Lutz. Perhaps rather "overkill" for my needs, but $15 for the Lite version seems reasonable, although VAT then gets added :-(

Can someone from PC-Mobile please confirm that the Acer N30 (and their serial cable) does indeed support hardware (RTS/CTS) handshaking. Otherwise I may as well just get their simple RXD/TXD interface cable (which appears to use a stero jack plug coupling ?)

Cheers, Alan.

Acer n30 has a full RS232 serial interface.
So yes the Acer serial cable supports RTS/CTS.

Hi there

I am soldering a cable to connect my sailplane data logging GPS to my n30.

I have stumbled because I canŽt find info on which pins on the n30 are the serial RxD and TxD pins. Can anyone supply me these?

Best regards
Max

Hi Max,

Personally, I bought and recommend a cable from Pc-Mobile.net who give good service at reasonable prices (a simple RXD/TXD cable looks to be less than 17 Euros or full RS232 with power input about 25 Euros, delivered).

However, I have measured the cable using a continuity tester and scalpel (pointed knife) with the following results. I don't know how the connector is numbered so have counted the pins from *Right to Left*, viewing the Acer from the front (i.e. looking at the screen normally).

Earth (DB9 pin 5) to Acer pins 1 and 3
RXD (DB9 pin 2) to Acer pin 7
TXD (DB9 pin 3) to Acer pin 11.

However, the pins are very small so I don't absolutely guarantee to have counted correctly; you make any connections at your own risk!

Cheers, Alan.

Well cheers mate!

Thanks for the info. On a second though, your recommendation about Pc-Mobile.net might also be worth a look. But at first IŽll try out a little soldering Smile

Best regards and thanks for the fast reply
