Can't switch SIRF to NMEA on 303MMF

Hi.

I just acquired a 303MMF, and tried to see the firmware version. I used winfast to switch from NMEA to SIRF 38400. But the commands in SIRF don't work, since I couldn't see the version (just hanged there), and I can't make a reset nor switch back to NMEA. I think I've waited long enough for the supercap to discharge, but the problem is still there. I use Winfast Navigator 1.1 and tweakGPS 0.9 and none of them can switch back to NMEA.
In tomtom, if I choose a sirf38400 gps, it shows the correct coordinates and the GPS works.

I'm using 303MMF in CF mode.

Can someone give me a hand in here, please?

Have you tried SiRFDemo ? That's the native program and should get you back into business. Ahm, you need a Windoze Notebook for that, and a PCMCIA CF adapter...

Thank you for your advice, Ibendlin. Tell me just one thing. Is it really necessary the PCMCIA adaptor, or can this be done with the serial cable that is included in the package?

Btw, why did this happen? Shouldn't the 303MMF work normally with the SIRF instructions and with Winfast Navigator?

I wasn't aware you have a serial adapter - that should work too.

No idea why WinFast cannot switch it back to NMEA. But it's not the original program, so maybe there's a required sequence that they don't send. Fishing in the dark as you may notice...

No luck with Sirfdemo Sad

I connected my GPS to the PC with the USB adaptor, the program recognizes my gps, but can't change it back to NMEA. Not even a factory reset I can make.

I don't understand why my GPS refuses to accept the sirf commands.

Ibendlin and all other users, I need more ideas please... Thank you for your patience.

you tried the discharge already which didn't work either... Well, either send it in for a replacement or use it witht he few programs that understand SiRF... Confused

The only way to switch modes on an HI-303MMF is via the CompactFlash interface (including the use of a PC Card to CompactFlash adapter).

To prevent problems with two inputs to the GPS chipset UART's serial input, there's no connection from the cable socket to the serial input - the cable socket is serial out only. That means you can't configure a HI-303 series GPS using a cable.

Winfast Navigator on the Pocket PC switches modes successfully on my fairly old HI-303MMF, but people with newer units seem to find it doesn't work. SiRFdemo on a laptop with the HI-303MMF in a CompactFlash to PC Card adapter always seems to work.

Letting the supercap go flat takes about four days on my unit, though I believe it takes a bit longer on the newer units.

Now that you mention the older and newer HI-303MMFs, this one I switched to SIRF and can't return to NMEA it's an old one I believe. With a cold start, it shows initially the date of 2002-11-10.

The newer one shows the date of 2004-08-10.
The odd thing is that the new doesn't update the coordinates with very low speeds. When I'm standing still, the coordinates should have some variation because of GPS error, but in this case they don't change. Besides this 303MMF it only starts to show my speed when I move above 2mph.
Do you know anything about this, or how to disable this feature?

That's "static Navigation" and can be disabled with SiRFdemo, too.

Hmmm...

I think I've read that static navigation isn't a simple thing to do.

Could you tell me more about it, Lutz? Also you're saying that this feature was disabled in the previous 303MMF versions, and now they've enabled it? Why? What good is it for?

The proper question is "What good is it against?" It's supposed to prevent the wild jumping around of your position when you're stationary (this has been defined as speeds below 4m/s I think). It's like the XTrac freeze effect.

The new GlobalSat BT-338 initiall also had this feature set, fortunately the currently sold units come with static navigation switched off.

Ok. Now there's an important question I have to make.
After turning off the Static Navigation on my 303MMF, will it be on again by default, when the internal cap has gone flat?

It would be very annoying to connect it to the PC and disable it again everytime the cap goes flat... Confused

Not even connected to a notebook with PCMCIA adaptor I could change it to NMEA. It is the same results as before. Not a single SIRF command is executed by the GPS...

Oh well... I guess i'll try a replacement for it.

Btw, I don't mean to be boring, but does anyone know the answer to my previous post?

Ok... I've found out that my Static Naviagation disable option doesn't last very long. Sad

So, if there's no way to make it default, maybe is it possible do disable it in the PDA using a sirf command in winfast navigator or gpstweak?
