I'm new to all this navigation stuff but need to place an order on some equipment today 8O so I have it in time for my Mum's birthday later this week. (If it wasn't for the last minute nothing would get done Wink ).

I'm looking for a navigation system that also covers mainland Europe (West & East).

1. Read somewhere that the new TomTom Go 700 will cover Europe. Is this just western Europe or is eastern Europe also included?

2. I understand that TomTom Go 700 is not yet available so another option would be to buy a pocket PC with TomTom software.
Is version 5 the latest version? if not what is? One option is to buy the latest software and then pay a small upgrade cost later. What pocket PC would you recommend?

3. What are the main differences between Version 5 software and the TomTom Go 700 or is it exactly the same software? or is it unknown at this time?

4. My parents won't need the navigation system until later this summer. Is it better to wait a couple of weeks until the new software/hardware comes out?

Thanks in advance for any replys

If you are buying a navigation device for your parents consider how technical they are. Having a PDA with a lot of wires and an occasional crash can be a pain, so I would definitely go for something from the TomTom GO range, which is simple to set up and operate.

All TTG cover Western Europe, but if you buy a TTG in the UK, it will come with the UK map on an SD card. To get Western Europe you will have to buy a bigger SD (say 1Gb) and the maps of Western Europe ftrom TomTom.

New GOs offer Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free operations (apart from TTG300) and traffic updates via your mobile phone.

If you don't need BT, hunt down one of TTG "Classic" (previos version), they are reasonably cheap and there will be a software upgrade to version 5 available soon.

There is only the TomTomGO available at the moment. The 300, 500 and 700 will not be sold until may at the earliest.

The current software version is 4.42. version 5 is due any day now and will be a free upgrade to the existing GO and come installed on the new models when they arrive.

Maps are separate. An update is due "soon". updated maps will be available at a cost to existing users. The upgraded maps will come with the new versions, but which maps you get will depend on the model and where you buy it. The cheaper ones will get your country and the major roads of Europe. The 700 will get a detailed map of east and west Europe - but you may not need this much detail. Major road map seems quite good for holiday use. plus maybe the detail map of the country you are visiting.

Thanks for the responses so far.

Some more info
Mum retires soon, Dad is already retired and they have a mobile home. The plan is for them to travel around Europe inc Eastern Europe. The extra detail on the whole of Europe will be a big advantage for the co-driver (my Mum).

The TomTomGo 700 at 550 quid 8O is looking like the best technical solution. I don't see any other solution that offers all of Europe in an easy to use package. (but I'm open to cheaper alternatives with the same/similar performance).

I think you're probably right in choosing the 700 for that sort of use. Those of us with the current Go are waiting to see if the detail maps of Europe are available on an SD card. Even if they are it might make the current versions too slow. It's the lack of information that makes it difficult to know which way to plan........

Only Poland and Czech Republic will be present on the map sold with the 700.

I suspected this may be the base as somebody said to me that electronic maps for other Eastern european countries were not very good or just not available. Are you 100% sure about this?

From the TomTomGo 700 marketing blurb ....
"Pre-installed maps of whole European region on HDD for door-to-door and cross border to any town/city in Europe"

Western Europe and two Eastern european countries is hardly the whole of Europe. Is this another 'büllshit over truth' in the marketing department? Evil or Very Mad

another pna option is to go for icn 6xx series but as said erlier the go might be a better option if you can wait then id maybe hang on you could go for somthing like the mitacs mia pda as this has a built in gps haveing loads of wires on a pda set up just isnt the case any more as there are mounting brackets with gps receiivers built in the cr100 from holux I can recomend but its only available for the ipaq 2200 series or the one from seido might be one to consider you get one of there systems with tt3 and then upgrade to v5 software which going of the sreen shots and reveiw looks to be almost the same as the go so ease of use should very good
