GPS Cable

I own a Garmin etrex GPS reciever which I think is great. Recently a friend gave me a cable that connects my etrex to my PC. Does anyone know if I can use this cable to communicate with my PC, or do I have to buy some software to make the whole thing work

Your were given a cable to connect to a PC.
Of course it should work with a PC.
