hi there,

I am new to the whole GPS thing - just got my fortuna bluetooth GPS clip-on. Now I wonder how to switch on WAAS or is it on automatically in areas where available? Or do I need a piece of software for my PDA to be able to make use of it / switch it on?

Thanks in advance
Regards
Andreas

It depends on where you live. In Europe it's called EGNOS. WAAS is for North America.

You can use Crux_View to set the SBAS mode.

Lutz,

thanks for the answer. I am actually in Europe so I guess I have to wait until next year to make use of EGNOS.
However where can I get Crux_View to set the SBAS mode (what ever that is - guess I need to do some more research here).

Thanks again
Andreas

Emtac Crux_View should be on our downloads page

EGNOS and WAAS are both SBAS systems (satellite based augmentation systems) as opposed to DGPS which is based on surface reference stations. Eventually they all represent some kind of fixed satellite with well known position that help to decrease the GPS signal DOP (dilution of precision) down to 3-5 metres (SBAS) or even sub-metre (for surface based DGPS).

There are a number of glossaries available on the web, for example here

I've got a Fortuna Clip-on and am using it with TT3 on an ipaq hx2750. So, in either XT it ST modes, does the fortuna use the corrective satellites or do I have to turn it on by using crux somehow? Some instructions on all of this would be great if anybody is knowledgeable enough?

I'm hoping that in XT mode at least, my clip on is using corrections through SBAS somehow?

Actually it's exactly the other way round. You can have either XT or SBAS, but not both.

You can enable SBAS in Crux_view, in one of the rightmost tabs.

So to enable sbas, do i have to have my fortuna clip on set in st or xt mode while i access it through crux_viewer? And of all the options, which is the best to set?

I assumed that you put it into xt mode and then select auto, or PRN120 for the egnos? What do I do exactly?

I am also worried that in crux viewer it doesnt display the current sbas setting?

Please read again what I was writing.

You must set the switch to ST, and then set SBAS to AUTO. Don't change any PRNs

If after that Crux_View does not report the SBAS status then you were not successful in setting it, or your receiver doesn't support it.

Thats what I wondered - if you could enable SBAS on the Fortuna Clip On. Thanks for your help so far. I just wanted to confirm that it could be done and that I should be seeing the confirmation somewhere in Crux.
