Incompatible kit - any views?

I have been using a Garmin E- trex Summit for mountain walking for some years and recently purchased Memory Map software so I could use it with my PDA (an iPAQ 1940). Unfortunately I have discovered that although the 1940 does have Bluetooth, it doesn't have a serial connection, so I can't link it with the Garmin.

This means some new kit purchases, but I'm not quite sure what best to replace at a reasonable budget. I would like to use the Memory Map software for hillwalking, and add some navigation software for use in the car. I have considered buying the bundled iPAQ rz1710 with Tom Tom GPS, so I could use this in the car, then switch to the Garmin with the iPAQ when I am out of doors.

Any views on whether this is a good compromise, or are there better ways to spend the money?

You're better off with an eBay purchase of, let's say a 2210 or a 3970. The 1710 has ridiculously little memory.
