|
|
I recently bought a tomtom go unit and was very impressed with it around my home area in Manchester
I made a trip down to london a few days back and thought this would give me a good opportunity to test it. The journey to london was fine, it even recognised the M6 toll.
However once I got into central london thats when the problems started, the unit kept losing the GPS signal and so I ended up getting lost a few times waiting for it to get a signal back.
This happened quite frequently even though the buildings weren't particularly that high. Normally I get full gps signal strength but in central london it was almost zero. I also noticed that the unit loses its signal strength much more frequently at night for some reason.
Are there any tomtom users who have the same problems when in central london or do I have a dodgy unit? |

Have you got a heated front windscreen, that would cause problems. If so, you will need a re-rad. My unit works fine with no problems since i got a re-rad. |

What car do you have?.
It might even have a reflective screen. |

I use TomTom in Central London and I agree that in certain parts it is possible to lose the signal perhaps more so than outside of the centre.
The other thing you have to watch in Central London is the amount of one way streets, no left and no right turns that have come into force and are not in TT3

I get problems sometimes, usually its when the street I'm on is only two lanes wide and the buildings are 4 or 5 stories high, I think it just has trouble seeing the sats. _________________ TomTom 6 - SPV M5000 and WM6

I've experienced similar problemes in Rome last week. Outside Rome it had excellent singal strength. I think it could be related to the rather narrow streets, somewhat tall buildings (5-6 stories) and lots of trees...
Nothing on my windscreen (Heating, UV, etc), but I guess an external would antenna help, but how much would it actually help in these situations (tall buildings, etc)?

The problem is fairly common and is known as Urban Canyoning, or, correctly, multi-path error. The symptoms are that either you will not get a lock at all or your position will not be as accurate, due to the signal bouncing off of buildings before it reaches your receiver.
I had a similar problem in Snowdonia over the weekend. Fairly good view of the sky, or so I thought, but lost signal for minutes at a time - damn mountains getting in the way. |
