|
|
I've bought 2 Kingston 512MB SD memory cards for use with iPaqs.
The first iPaq (1940) is to be used with a Tomtom receiver.
The second iPaq (3870) is to be used with a Fortuna Clip on.
Both using Tomtom Navigator 3.03.
Is Kingston memory OK?
I had a Sandisk memory chip previously, but was told by Fortuna that if the chip was made in China, then I might have problems with it because it may not read and write quick enough. They told me to go for one manufactured in Europe, Japan or USA.
I got the Sandisk replaced with Kingston, because I'd previously read that they were OK.
But the new Kinston memory cards have "ASSY in Taiwan". I assume this is saying assembled in Taiwan?
Am I still OK to keep the Kingston memory?
(I called Kingston and their tech support seemed clueless. They said that the Kigston should be OK regardless of where the chips were manufactured.)
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks.

You should not worry about which brand of memory. Almost all memory cards nowadays, whatever the cost, should be OK for general use. Some boast better speed (for same spec) but in practice there is little practical difference.
What else is not made in China nowadays?
Workmanship in China in general is inferior. If the QC of the company is good enough, the quality should be on par with other countries.
Products assembled in any country may still use large protions of parts produced in China!
Your Kingston memory should be OK. _________________ Pc-Mobile

Erm... I'm sure if you do a bit of research and read around... you'll find out that there is an issue with the memory cards.
This is what Tomtom said to me:
"Regarding SD/CF cards the following may well be of interest to you:
We have received numerous reports regarding SD/CF cards.
If using a Sandisk SD card made in China or Taiwan, please exchange this for a new SDcard manufactured in Europe, Japan or the USA.These can cause problems regarding reading speeds or worse corrupted files on the SD card and are therefore not readable.
These cards often work with other applications or in digital cameras etc but are not fast enough to read back data for the TomTom software."
And hence why I made my post about the Kingston memory. _________________ iPaq 3870

My comment on memory cards are in general.
There are of course compatibility issue, as there is bound to be some difference in design and specification of each manufacturer.
If Sandisk has compatibility issue with some software/hardware, then it should be the same whether it is made in USA or Ireland or Thailand or China or Taiwan because it is made to Sandisk specification.
Within each make/brand, there are also different models in regarding to speed. If Tom Tom require high speed read from the card then you need to get a high speed card, whatever the brand.
You will find that most of Europena/USA brand cards are made otuside these countries, mostly from the ones listed above. _________________ Pc-Mobile

I've got a 256mb Kingston SD card (made in Taiwan). I've had it about 2 months now and no problems.
