If you're using a company intranet, then the speed might appear to be affected by other traffic using the network |
You’re correct, I was using a company connection, hence the download and upload speeds were similar.
Here’s my current ISP speed:

TalkTalk more like BaulkBaulk!
We bought a house in April 2007. The previous owner left us the number connected, which was on TalkTalk. I rang TalkTalk up to give them the date of transfer so that the previous owner would have a bill up until they left and we would have a phone bill from the day that we moved in. TalkTalk refused to talk to me – stating the Data Protection Act. To cut a long story short, I got BT to take over the phone line, which got rid of TalkTalk.

Yes, it is pretty good and I no longer have a teenager moaning that his X-Box Live connection has slowed down every time I try a download or send/receive e-mails with attachments - there's enough bandwidth for everybody.
My next step will be to upgrade my wireless router to one with a 125mb/s capacity, so that a shared 54mb/s router doesn't become the new bottleneck _________________ Andy

As far as I know, AOL run the infrastructure behind TalkTalk - I was at my parents' yesterday sorting out a few things and when you go to mytalktalk.co.uk, it's re-directed to aol.co.uk/xxxxxx
My parents seem happy enough with TalkTalk and I know a few other people who haven't had any problems. If price is a major consideration, it may not be bad - but speed and performance may be better elsewhere _________________ Andy

Actually TalkTalk (Carphone Warehouse) owns AOL UK. AOL and TT are still separate but TT now uses the AOL infrastructure for it's email. Like how Sky uses Google Mail for it's email. |

Even before Virgin bought out NTL, NTL were running the infrastructure behind Virgin internet.
I'm just glad that I usually know enough myself to sort any problems out and only have to resort to picking up the phone when I'm fairly confident that the problem lies with my ISP _________________ Andy

when it works it's fine! a mate of mine, on talk talk, router packed in. i knew from the outset it was the router - worked fine one minute, wouldn't the next. i borrowed my brothers talk talk router (same model) and that connected fine so no problems with the set up or line etc etc
phoned support... took about 5 calls and a very nasty letter until they finally sent out a new router/modem - surprise surprise it worked fine...
funniest part (but VERY frustrating at the time) was when i described the issue to level 2 support; told them that it was unable to get an ip address so is more than likely a fault with the modem/router as it was showing it was connected to the adsl line. then mentioned that there were no issues with the mac address as windows was reporting all these with no conflicts etc etc etc - i was then told - oh, we don't support mac's thats why it doesn't work...

Virgin had a problem yesterday evening:
the broadband went of
resetting the modem made no difference
the fault report line (151) was unavailable
the customer service line (150) was unavailable
After about an hour, 150 & 151 came back online and there was a recorded message advising of a fault in my postcode area.
I can live happily with a recorded message, but not being able to phone anybody was like missing an arm - it was the not knowing which was frustrating.
The TV (which shares the same cable as the broadband) and phone for other calls were unaffected. I guess that they must use voice over IP, which was taken down when their web servers fell over.
I gave up and went to bed and in the wee small hours of this morning everything kicked back into action and I could breathe easy again _________________ Andy

Simalar here.
BB went off at 10pm - just came back 5 minutes ago.
150 can't be used any more. Have to use 0906 212 1111 at 25p minute plus 10p conection fee.
No answer. Phone was fine but calling VM resulted in being cut off. Sometimes after 2 rings and sometimes i'd make 2 selections and then get cut off. No message. |

Looking on the Virgin web site this morning, this appears to have been a nationwide fault.
BTW, the 0906 number @ 25p/min is refunded if you prove the fault is at Virgin's end _________________ Andy

Ouch!
Have you tried ringing Virgin on their free Phone number of 0800 0521435?
I don't know if it's the right number, but I got it from the following excellent website:

This is what the BBC have to say about the Virgin outage - here
As far as I know, the 0800 number for support no longer works because the 0906 number is given as the 'new' support number.
...but make sure that they agree to refund the cost of the call if it's proven to be a fault at their end _________________ Andy
