Nope. Unless you have a full list of what was loaded last time and now this it's difficult to say what caused the map download to card last time yet didn't need the card this time. Of course it's quite possible it was an Express error Wink

Hello Sussamb

Afraid I didn't keep a copy of what was loaded last time to compare against this version - all I know is that Garmin Express told me that everything was downloaded successfully, both last time and this time!!

Time will tell - no doubt!!

cheers

Allan

The files sizes for this version (full Western Europe) are:

GMAPPROM - 3,441,344
3d - 734,544
JCV - 380,863 (smaller than previously so I would guess new compression technology)

been trying to update my maps all afternoon, just does not work, tells me 2 hours remaining and just sits there, in the drop down box it says waiting for other updates.

Now it is crashing out saying there was a problem and try again.

Sure I had similar problems last time.

I think there is an alternative program for updates rather than garmin express.
Could somebody point me to it please

Thanks

Well after some 25 years of using Garmin, I am spitting blood and seriously thinking of moving to another platform.
The main reason is the mess called "Garmin Express" (Don't even go near "Basecamp").
I have spent most of this afternoon and evening trying to update the maps on my Nuvi 1690.
I chose the option of updating the Device and PC, as I find it easier to do the initial routing on the PC (Good old Mapsource).
At the end, got the message that all updates had been completed.
Sure enough the Maps on the PC had been updated, but the ones on the device were not. Got a message that:
"Internal memory is almost full. You may want to purchase a memory card for this device to ensure sufficient space for future updates"
Well, I DO have a memory card inserted into the device!
For the life of me I cannot get this software to recognise the SD card, even though I can see and read it in Windows explorer. The SD card has 7GB free on it.
I have spent a few hours going back and forth but to no avail.
ANYBODY have any ideas please?

Think you mean MapUpdater

http://download.garmin.com/lmu/GarminMapUpdater.exe

Just check though that your AV/Firewall isn't blocking the download

Check it's formatted FAT32. Note though that Express will only use it if there isn't enough internal space. Sounds like there is at the moment.

ok,
so my 3598 has been connected to garmin express all night. The screen which was showing updating now shows as connect your device.

Something has happened as on the device. I used to only have 331mb spare, now it is showing as over 3gb spare.

Where will I find the map on the garmin device? Have had a hunt using file manager but cannot see it, I have windows set to show hidden files etc. On turning on the nuvi, it shows a map & says waiting for satellite.

How do I find which version of map I have, in the device screen it shows sw version 4, but nothing about the map.

Running garmin express, it just hangs and will not update the device,
using map updater, it says connecting to server and never changes, until I unplug the garmim, then it tells me to reconnect it, then it sees the device and says not enough memory to install western Europe map.

ok, just an update to the above,
have been outside to pick up the gps and the garmin finds them ok, but there is no map on the device, just green & grey landscape. So it looks like the map has been taken off, hence the space on the device.
Garmin express will not load the new map and map updater will not put on the map either (that I have paid for) as there is not enough space.

Ideas anybody?
Ta

Away from my PC this weekend otherwise could help more. Try googling Garmins nuvi clone ... If you can find the instructions mapupdater should download maps to your clone, then copy maps to .system folder on your nuvi

Thanks, will have a fiddle.

It looks like there is no .System folder on my nuvi.
This maybe explains the sudden increase in free memory space on the nuvi.

I am guessing the map update has somehow removed this folder and not re-created it.

How do I create it? Have tried creating a new folder called .System but Windows will not let me do it.

On my nuvi backup, I do have a .System folder, but again Windows does not allow me to copy & paste it to the nuvi.

Have tried creating a System folder on the nuvi, that works, but when trying to copy the contents of the .System folder of my backup into it, Windows reports not enough disk space.

It's a hidden system folder so you have to set Windows to show hidden AND system folders. You also have to set your nuvi to mass storage mode.

cheers sus, that explains why I could not see the .System on the nuvi.

Have installed garmin express on my laptop and guess what, it updated without any problems.

No idea why, both using the same router. No firewall or virus stuff running, both using the same OS.

Now going to back it up to my NAS.

Cheers for your help.

Glad sorted. Often turns out to be a problem with PC or router/wifi .

what is most interesting,

the 4GB SD card that was supplied with the Nuvi only had my custom POIs on it before the map upgrade totalling just a few k.

However now it has only 393MB free and some new files on it, one of which is called gmapprom.gma which is 3,441,344k.

The internal memory, which before the map update had just 331MB spare now has 4.96Gb used and 2.06 GB spare.

I am guessing the map is now too big for the device and has been split between internal and SD memory.

Be interesting to see what has happened with other folks devices.
