Perfect! And the other 23 hours a day when kids aren't coming and going from school people can go about their business as usual. Simple.
Of course, the greenies want us all to drive at walking speed so that won't keep them happy. _________________ Gone fishing! |

I happened to be down in Bristol over the few days that they were rolling this out. I hadn't heard anything about it prior to that. On some of the roads, the lower speed limit may have made some sense - after all, it wasn't safer to go any faster than 20 on a residential street with solid lines of cars on either side. Others, that offered good visibility, were safely navigable at 30. If there's one thing that peeves me, it's the fact that other drivers can't be trusted to tell the difference, and those of us that can get penalised for their ineptitude.
I don't honestly mind the idea of 20mph limits on residential side streets, as long as we're only talking about the last quarter mile of any journey. But the main roads (even residential ones) should be 30mph to allow a reasonable flow of traffic and to reduce pollution. If this poses an unacceptable risk to pedestrians and cyclists, then barriers and crossings should be built to make them safer.
Part-time (and properly timed) 20mph limits around schools certainly seem like a good idea. But they should go hand in hand with other enforcement too. Parents always used to park illegally (often on the zig-zags) outside our little 'uns school. It took a child with a broken foot (from being driven over by someone who didn't even bother to stop) before they started enforcing the parking properly there with wardens. Still, when I drive past other schools in the area, I see the zig-zag and other parking restrictions ignored by drivers and unenforced by the authorities. It strikes me that, as usual, there's far too much focus on speed and not enough on selfishness and stupidity. _________________ TomTom GO700

Would be better if they kept it to narrow/residential roads where more caution should be applied but by blanket 20mph zones regardless of the surroundings will just lead to more complacency and more crap drivers imo.
I'll be suprised if we don't have more accidents involving motorists and pedestrians/cyclists as motorists either completely ignore the new limits or spend more time watching there speedo than the actual road and there surroundings. |
