As long as you have a backup then there is no problem in formatting the device - Mike

As it's flash memory there's no real point in formatting it. You normally format (then restore) discs to improve access times. This doesn't apply with solid state memory. Access times are uniform. Just delete what you don't need. This way it helps to prevent you accidentally removing something that is crucial.

There's a school of thought that says you shouldn't go around doing too many unnecessary writes to a flash device - it will eventually wear it out. Crucial (the memory suppliers) state 1million read/write cycles - so if you want to format it go-ahead - live dangerously
