I have just spoken to a helpful chap at Garmin.
Apparently if you attempt to register your Garmin device online before its first satellite fix, it will use the date the maps were installed to the device as the date instead. Since this unit had been on a shelf for 7 months, there was a sufficiently large gap for this to mean I didn't qualify for a free update.
However, all I have to do this evening is scan the shop receipt and email it to him, and it will be sorted out for me.
I really like those chaps at Garmin, and am so far glad I insisted on the wife getting me another Garmin and not a Tom-Tom as she wanted.

I hadn't heard anything back from the chap at Garmin, so I thought I ring and chase them. A felt a bit of a chump when a nice girl explained that the 2009 map download was available on the download page for me already.
Well! How was I to know, if they don't tell me!
Anyway, I shall do that tonight, and hopefully all will be well.

Well it was a HUGE download! A native Macintosh installer for "City Navigator® Europe NT 2009 Map Update", all 2.9GB of it!
It took several hours to download, then a further half an hour for the Mac to check the image and mount it, another hour to build the map data, and another hour to update the Nuvi.
