I would not want all mapshare updates to be verified by Tomtom. If they had the resources to do that, then the maps would have been perfect in the first place.

But most people will probably agree that it's utterly important that the map changes are verified properly before they are integrated into a new map release to avoid getting degraded quality of the map data (the responsibility of Tele Atlas really).

I would agree that verified map cvhanges on a new map should be verified, but I think that unverified map changes should be carried across to new maps as unverified changes.

Many of the inaccuracies in the maps probably come from the underlying map source (council roading authorities etc), so the only way to verify a change is to go and drive the road. I don't know how often Teleatlas/Tomtom drive around a particular town to check map accurracy, but I would be surprised if it is typically more often than 3-5 years.

This is why mapshare is potentially such an improvement.

mapshare, while a reasonably new technology, will be what separates tomtom from other GPS providers in the future. the bottom line is, more information means a better overall product. the more you put in, the more you get out of it. taking things "open source" will greatly benefit the consumers, especially those living in areas that don't have frequent map updates. give mapshare time - it'll make all the difference.

As for the "cannot turn left/right into..." correction: it is interesting that v8 SOFTWARE can now make this type of correction on a v7 MAP.
A friend who has that set-up has just made a particular correction near me, and we are now waiting to see if I get it on my v7/v7 set-up in the next few days...

Let us know what you find out. Apparently, there is some way for V8 Software to correct V7 maps. It will be interesting to see if such corrections show up on V7 software devices!

Again. Thanks to all.

Well, my friend made one correction near me on thursday.
Mapshare downloads were broken for me last night, but I managed to get them today.

No change so far (but I think it's too early anyway).

I suppose this either means:
1. they haven't filtered through the system yet - I'll keep looking whenever I update from now on. OR....
2. It needs more than one person's report to change something like this (although ages ago we proved that one report could move a POI) OR...
3. That although v8 software can do this type of update on v7 maps, v7 software can't interpret the corrections.

We just don't know enough about how the mapping really works to do more than speculate about #3.

Do you want it checked on v8/v8?

Unlikely it would be applied to the later map, but you never know!

I wondered when you were going to spot that one, Dennis! Laughing

And Anita... Thanks for the offer. he has already corrected it on v8.05 WE. (see HERE)
but it would be good to know if/when the correction gets through to other users of that map. Thumbs Up

This is a very good point! But it should also include the verified changes, since they may not yet have been corrected by Tele Atlas in the new map release and we don't want to add these manually again.

For the MapShare changes that can be viewed visually on the map (street names and blocking/unblocking of a street) it would be nice if some coulour coding was used to distinguish them from the original map data. I think someone mentioned this in another thread recently.
