Problem is that I reported several problems and one replies with this standard copy/paste V6 (despite the fact that I clearly indicate it's 7.02 I'm using) hard reset procedure as answer. As if this is a one solution fits all for all the problems which aren't cartography related.
Let's compare it with something else: I report that nothing gets printed and one replies that I need to reboot the PC or even reinstall windows. A better solution would be to ask to print a test page via the menus of the printer itself. Then you'll know if it's the printer itself or not. If not, you can look futher on USB cables, PC HW and printer drivers.

It is a little annoying but I don't think its the only device that needs a reboot (basically what a reset is). My friends use TomToms and they have to reset theirs quite frequently. I agree it should not require a reset, but its should be understood that the majority of Sat Nav software is a collection of components (sometimes made by a 3rd parties). If one component has a bug (say the audio driver) then the only way for us to sort it out is to reboot (until the component manufacturer fixes the bug). We cant just terminate the process with CRTL + ALT + DEL like on a PC and restart the application.
Re: Moving away from Windows... This would probably be one hell of a job and require complete redevelopment of the product (i.e move to Linux). I'm not even sure what Garmin/TomTom use? I think moving from WinCE is a little impractical...but removing the dependency on Active Synch may be possible and worthwhile (this may make porting to other OS easier).
We just need to report these bugs and be patient... I'm sure it will be fixed. Stu is listening in too...
Edit: I've also been told that Vista 64 issues are being sorted out as well.
I agree that some of the standard replies are not great and sometimes completely unrelated to the original question. I got a cartography standard reply and the question had nothing to do with cartography issues.
Having more personalised responses would be a great improvement if the resources allow... Have you ever replied to support saying 'OK, I've done the reset, but still does not work, what else can you suggest?' is it more personalised then? If you're still not happy... PM Stu as he's the man that can help you. Without sending feedback to Stu directly, it's unlikely that it will improve... maybe in his next meeting he could talk about support issues i.e. more in depth 1st line troubleshooting advice is required (possibly native English too ).

I live about 20 miles due east of Bristol and have used the unit extensively throughout the area. TMC reception is very variable and also seems affected by the car windscreen.
Some examples:
Driving down the M4 from London to Cardiff I get nothing until I am in Wales but.......... if I am on A roads travelling a little more slowly I do get signals in and around Swindon and Bath and occasionally up and down the M32.
My previous car was a Volvo and I got TMC signals perhaps 30% of the time, my new car is a BMW (with standard windscreen which I am told is not athermic - that costs extra of course ) and I get much poorer reception. I am lucky to get a signal 10% of the time.
On a recent trip to W Wales I was amazed to get a signal 85% of the time west of Swansea right out in the boondocks but I suspect this is because there was less interference from too many competing radio stations.
I have also ALWAYS got a good signal anywhere around the M42 i.e. Birmingham.
At the end of the day I have come to the conclusion that TMC is very hit and miss which is why I always rely on my Trafficmaster Freeway to advise of hold-ups - and that tends to be right 90%+ of the time.

Firstly thank you to all those who replied to my original post, and for those that did, yes a reset has resolved the TMC issue, well in as far as it now scans and selects a channel everything else being equal. Stu: I see the new release 7.0.3 is on the site today, will install that later and see if I can update my camera database, fingers crossed.
I not that there were some posts re resets in general on the VM and indeed PC’s. I’m certainly not going to debate the rights and wrongs, I have better things to do. But having worked in IT for far far to long the old “+ctl+alt+del” does have its uses. Users always assume it’s a cure all, and quite often it does, however its more important use is it takes the PC back to a know state, i.e. just booted so you have a fighting chance of finding what has gone wrong. Trying to track down an error on a box that has been running for Hrs, days or months in the case of servers is near impossible as so many routines will have been initialized, and closed or not.

Right 7.0.3 is installed, and yes I can download the Camera Database, although it seems to have updated to November and I thought December was out, but I’m not quibbling at the moment. Well done VM I have gone from being a sceptic to a convert.
Don't laugh at a possible solution that I may have found. I have never got a decent tmc signal except in France. Always the optimist, I slapped it on the screen this morning. After about 15 mins got a signal. Eh? Then realised that one of the two suckers had unsuckered and the unit was at 45 degrees. After that I had no probs (driving through Surrey and SW London). Hope this may help.
